Apple 17" display

Apple is preparing to launch a new 17-inch standalone LCD display -- the first since the company discontinued its 17-inch Studio Display in 2004 -- according to one report. Apple will launch its new 17-inch widescreen LCD monitors by the first quarter of 2007, according to DigiTimes, which will replace entry-level and mid-range 15- and 17-inch LCDs moving forward. Additionally, more efficient panel cutting by LCD makers will reduce the cost of new units, ensuring the new screens will not ship fetch a premium price upon their forthcoming debut.

Hope this is true

I know a few people who would have purchased an Apple brand 17" widescreen if they had them. The problem that I see is the cost of a decent 19" widescreen can be found for under $200. I doubt Apple will offer a 17" for cheaper than that. They price their displays at one heck of a premium with little bang for your buck.

And they may make computers that don't need extended repair programs. And they may give a free ipod to all Mac users. Then again, what WILL they do???

Isn't it kind of hard to replace models that don't exist and haven't for years? Did the Mac Mini replace the Performa 400?

"ship fetch"? And what's a 'premium' price? Theoretically the same LCD cutting Apple would gain from Dell would too, and allow them to cut prices as well. Although when you're talking that price, its hard to call a $50 difference a 'premium'.

fix the timing!

11/27, 02:48pm reply

hope they do-- these are great to tuck in tight corners and deploy as sceond monitors. I use the tripod/ADC model adjunct to my 20" Cinema iskplay-- they are the same height, it's a perfect aesthetic. (No, I have no life.)

But the timing went screwy for Apple's 17's under Tiger. I'm driving mine through the original NVidia TwinView card which came with the Dual 800 G4-- half ADC and half VGA-- and using a Gefen Extend-It converter the VGA to ADC worked perefctly through Jaguar, through Panther, and whoops, in Tiger I get a nice black band along the right edge-- which is beginning to burn a line!

So the nice folks at Gefen offer a reprogrmaming service to fix the Tiger issue. Since none of the software tools I've acquired help, it's worth the 25.00.

Still, if I get a new one, the timing better work in both Panther and Tiger and Leopard.
