DRM Dumpster converts iTunes tracks

DRM Dumpster released

BurningThumb.com has released DRM Dumpster, a utility designed to legally convert DRM tracks in an iTunes music library to MP3 files using a CD-RW and iTunes itself. Users simply launch DRM Dumpster, click the Dump DRM button, and insert a CD-RW disc to begin the conversion process. iTunes will display a new playlist that contains MP3 files once the operation is complete, and the application allows users to resume conversion where it left off in the even of an error during the process. DRM Dumpster is available for free, requiring Mac OS X 10.2 or later alongside a scriptable version of iTunes -- such as iTunes 7 -- and a CD burner with a CD-RW disc.

    DRM Dupester?

I don't get it - you can do all this without DRM Dumpster - just burn the songs to a CD-RW and then import them back into iTunes. This app isn't stripping the DRM at all, it's merely decoding and re-encoding. There will be quality loss. DRM Dupester?

    Re: um... legally

It is legal to burn songs to a disc and re-rip them. That is what this software does.

I agree with booboo - the name is a misnomer. Hymm was the only DRM remover for iTunes songs and it no longer works.

    Simple sequence of tasks

Well, if you examine what the software (actually script) does, it is clear that this only automates the process that is already available to users through iTunes. You are legally allowed to burn your DRM-protected tracks on an audio CD. With that CD, you can do whatever you're allowed to do with any other commercial music CD under existing laws and 'fair use' clauses. One of those is ripping it into your computer and compressing/encoding it into another format (such as MPEG 2 Layer 3 or MPEG 4, also known as MP3 and AAC respectively), for personal use. These individual steps are perfectly legal and not against DMCA.

Someone might argue, though, that the grand purpose of this script is to essentially circumvent copy protection and encryption, which runs against DMCA. The outcome of any litigation based on this argument would depend on the billing rates (i.e. skills) of trial lawyers arguing the case, as it might go either way.

    considering...

...it's free, and it automates a clunky process for you, what's all the bitchin about?

    Hmm..

This would be a bit more useful if you could use a disk image of a CD-RW rather than an actual CD-RW. Anyone want to try?

    couple little problems...

...with this app. aside from the fact that it never seems to actually manage to burn to the CD-RW, if it did actually work, it would take forever and a week to do a whol library this way. also, there are no prefs, so have no way to control the sample rate and bit depth of the resulting MP3s.

i would love to donate to support the app, but i now see little value to it after trying to use it.
