Core 2 Duo MacBooks

Apple today unveiled its new MacBook featuring Intel Core 2 Duo processors and offering double the memory as well as greater storage capacity than the previous generation. The one-inch thin laptops are up to 25 percent faster than the previous generation, according to Apple, and maintain the built-in iSight video camera for on-the-go video conferencing alongside a double-layer SuperDrive for burning DVDs. The new notebooks also retain Apple's MagSafe Power Adapter that safely disconnects when under strain, and iLife '06, Apple's suite of digital lifestyle applications. The updated MacBooks start at $1,099 and include three models: white 1.83GHz and 2GHz MacBooks, as well as the black 2GHz MacBook. [updated]

Should boost holiday sales. Would have been a real coup if they came in at $999 for entry level model.

This is the notebook I've been waiting for. Definitely the laptop I'll be getting for graduate school. I'll have OS X and Windows installed and I'll have the only laptop that will actually work with the projector.

Will these macbooks also be shipped without the firewire port? I know it is good technology, but I just can't stand firewire ports.

Are You Joking? - and yes, obviously, it will.

If you don't like it so much, just don't use it.

Finally! C2Ds... Are you asking if you can BTO a MacBook WITHOUT FW port? Um, no. Personally, i LOVE Gigabit Ethernet, but i HATE the port! ;-)

That should be Apple's next commercial. "Hello I'm a Mac. "And I'm a pc." "And I'm Prof. Schnauzer and I'm trying to ... um ... this darn machiine ... hey can anyone help me here?" [Mac raises hand and PC rolls his eyes]

Firewire is great!

ikon - Are you kidding or serious? You don't like firewire. Why don't you read about it in Wikipedia or google for IEEE 1394. It is a great invention and very unfortunate that USB 2.0 is being used for high speed peripherals more than Firewire. Regardless of advertised bandwidths, Firewire 400 trounces USB 2.0 in high speed transfers. I read recently, that for transferring large files, an external HD with both firewire and USB2.0 was used (in Windows). This file took 33 minutes to transfer over USB while only taking 17 minutes over Firewire. It is also daisy chainable, supports isochronous transfers and is totally peer-to-peer, allowing for great consumer electronics applications. BTW, it is the only way to transfer DV video from a camcorder to a PC/Mac. So, if you are going to use it for any video import/edit, better have it!!

a solution

Maybe a patch of white electrical tape could be used to cover the offensive firewire point if it's awesomeness is too much for you. Or maybe there will be a market for someone to develop a firewire port chastity belt for the firewire shy.
