BMG Japanese artists, iTMS

BMG Japan and Apple today announced the availability of Japanese and international artists on iTunes in Japan. The addition of the BMG Japan catalog brings top J-POP and international artists to the iTunes Store, including Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake, Kasabian, Outkast, Pink, Seamo, Suga Shikao, Sukima Switch, Usher, and more. "BMG Japan is delighted to join forces with Apple to make the wealth of our catalogue available through the iTunes Store in Japan." said Daniel DiCicco, executive vice president of BMG Japan. "We look forward to continuing to drive BMG Japan's digital development through this very important relationship by connecting the iTunes community to top J-Pop and international artists from BMG Japan."

"Top artists, breakthrough pricing, seamless integration with iPod and groundbreaking personal use rights have made iTunes the number one online music service in Japan," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "We're thrilled to bring BMG's impressive catalog to iTunes so fans in Japan can download and enjoy even more great music."

The iTunes Store in Japan now features a vast catalog of more than two million songs, 3,500 music videos, Disney and Pixar short films, 65,000 podcasts and 16,000 audiobooks. With over 90 percent of songs priced at 150 yen per song, the iTunes Store boasts more than 1.5 billion songs purchased and downloaded, according to Apple. BMG Japan will continue to add more of its extensive catalog to the iTunes Store in the coming months.

    Why only in Japan?

why is it that media companies still feel the need to restrict products to certain regions of the world? Who cares if only 5 people outside of Japan buy a song? It costs *nothing* to be available via iTMS in both Japan and the rest of the world. Sure, you might not promote it heavily, but not sell it? That's just dumb...

Yes, it's frustraing. You can't even buy Japan iTMS music outside of Japan unless you have a credit card in Japan. The is one other way, the prepaid iTunes music cards, which we happen to sell at J-List (www.jlist.com), due to massive customer request.

I agree, given that once a song is digitized it costs next to nothing to put it on more than 1 iTunes store, why are the music companies so against this. Even if it's a chance for them to make more money!

    J-Pop in iTunes Store

I knew I'd bought stuff by Ayumi Hamasaki in the iTunes store, so I just checked. I got 1000 songs just searching for genre "J-Pop" but I also only got 1000 songs searching for "Jazz", so I suspect there's a lot more there...

    459 tracks by Ayumi. ^_^

    Local Issues Mess Things

Japanese companies and market have their own way of doing business and its sometimes an impediment - its not just being able to upload stuff but previous agreements with artists, financial handling (the laws governing fraudulent orders in Japan are very different than they are in the US) and the inertia of licensing IP in general. IP rights holders know they have "exclusive" uses usually and are comfortable with waiting out negotiations if their property isnt likely to go stale.
