NeoOffice Aqua 2.0 beta

The NeoOffice project has released NeoOffice Aqua 2.0 Beta 3, the first free public beta of NeoOffice 2.0 offering Mac OS X users a native Office suite without the need to install X Window System. The project is a port of the OpenOffice.org codebase to native Mac OS X APIs (Application Program Interfaces) and toolkits, integrating with the Mac OS X core. Previous beta releases were available to members of an "early access" program designed to fund the development of NeoOffice, according to NewsForge. OpenOffice.org 2.0 is largely supported by Sun Microsystems, and is an X11 binary requiring the X Window System to run. NeoOffice makes use of a fully native Aqua interface that integrates with Mac OS X features such as the clipboard, drag-and-drop functionality, and Spotlight. NeoOffice 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later, and is available for free. [corrected]

    OpenOffice X

There’s a native OpenOffice for X in the works. Neo Office runs in Java.

    Not Java

NeoOffice does NOT run in Java. NeoOffice has the same exact core as OpenOffice.org, which runs in C / C++. The Interface of NeoOffice runs using Cocoa frameworks. Java is merely used as a way to link The Cocoa based interface with the C/C++ application. Essentiall replacing the X11 piece of OpenOffice.org.

It uses very little. However, Apple has done great work in making Java integrated with OSX and has some really fantastic capability for bridging the technologies. The NeoOffice develoeprs are using those linking abilities in Java to simplify the connection between the Cocoa and C/C++ back end.

It runs really nicely, I use it most of the time except when I have to edit a document that is complex and HAS to have 100% Word compatibility. Then I just use Word, but I dislike it... NeoOffice is better in my opinion - just that most of the people I work with and our customers use Word...

    NeoOffice©/J

I always thought NeoOffice©/J was a Java version. I was a bit confused about this new NeoOffice without the "J." I gues they've dropped it as this is the only NeoOffice project now (formerly, there was NeoOffice©/C — I did some research).

NeoOffice does seem to run a bit slowly. That made me think Java as well. Let's see if 2.0 is any faster.

    Runs slowly?

I just tried it on my Mac Pro for a few minutes and it didn't seem slow at all.
