MS: media player market still growing

MS Zune takes on Apple

Microsoft this week said that it sees plenty of room for growth in the digital music player market as the company tries to dethrone Apple's own iPod music player, which has more than 75 percent marketshare in the US and 50 percent worldwide. The company said that it would promote its forthcoming Zune player using the expected wireless capabilities to differentiate the music player from other offerings, including Apple's iPod. "Microsoft plans to heavily promote the wireless capabilities on its new digital music player, Zune, in order to position the device as an alternative to the iPod, which currently lacks wireless functionality, a Microsoft spokesperson told eWEEK. In addition, Microsoft said that the digital music player market will eventually mushroom to hundreds of millions of units a year—up from a current rate of 30 to 40 million units per year: "We want it to be the best music experience you can have," he said at a Citigroup investment conference that was broadcast over the Web. "You'll see a lot of emphasis on community, a shared type of experience."

    Ahh MS

Always talking about dethroning this and killing that. With that attitude, it's no wonder some people hate Microsoft.

    well..

since MS never said anything about dethroning or killing.. not sure your point is valid... The writer of the article used those words to kick up the dust.

    Wireless will sell..

Using wireless to differentiate might attract some people. However, when they realise their battery will die after 3 hours of wireless use, they'll turn it off and keep it off. Suddenly, the only reason they bought it, rather than iPod, doesn't actually work in a meaningful way.

    Bla Bla Bla

Really, who in their right mind is going to hunt down a Wi-Fi hotspot, pay an access fee, then download something to their MS-Pud? People use their iPods for listening to music organized from the mother ship computer.

The Zune should be renamed the loony.

    What Them Kids Want....

Microsoft spokesman says, "You'll see a lot of emphasis on community, a shared type of experience."

Is there seriously one person in the world who turns on their iPod and thinks, "Woe, if only I were more connected to the community."

Some massively delusional Microsoft committee conjured their wet dream fantasy of a room full of rich kids, each with his own Zune, all rockin' out separately, unable to speak to each other due to their individual blaring headphones but wirelessly sharing songs and then PURCHASING and PURCHASING all sorts of music they didn't even know they wanted. MS is of their minds! If you want community, why not patch your iPod into the stereo so at least everyone can rock out in sync?

ZUNE - can't say it with a straight face.

    I don't understand

I don't understand how wireless fits in with a *portable* media player. Is the user expected to stand next to someone to tap into their playlists? Maybe sit at a Starbucks? What happens when you move away from the WiFi source?

This whole wireless thing just seems like MS throwing in some feature without thinking of its usefullness, just to say they have something the iPod doesn't.

    ...seems silly to me.
