Apple introduces Core 2 Duo-based iMacs

Apple Core 2 Duo iMacs

As a prelude to its special event next week, Apple today introduced a significant update to its iMac line that caters to a wider range of users At the forefront is a larger-screened 24-inch model which had previously been anticipated in a slightly smaller form. All four new models use mobile Core 2 Duo processors which Apple claims can improve performance by as much as 50 percent over the original 2GHz Core Duo launched earlier this year. Most models are shipping tomorrow with the new 24-inch iMac available in 2-4 business days from the Apple Store. Click through for detailed information on the new models.

At the low end is a new 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac based on the educational version: it reaches its $999 price by reverting to integrated Intel graphics and removing the Apple Remote as well as built-in Bluetooth.

Occuping the mid-range are 17-inch and 20-inch models that are similar to earlier models but receive Core 2 Duo processor upgrades to 2GHz and 2.16GHZ respectively, as well as 1GB of RAM. A new option is a third RAM slot that lets users upgrade to 3GB of RAM. Prices have also dropped substantially: the new 17-inch model starts at $1199, while the 20-inch update is available for $1499.

Lastly, the new 24-inch iMac sports a 1920x1200 display resolution capable of handling 1080p at full quality. As with the 20-inch model, a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, and 250GB of storage are standard; graphics are upgraded to a 128MB GeForce 7300GT with a 256MB GeForce 7600 GT available as an option. Apple's new flagship model is available for $1999.
