DAZ offers Bryce 5 free
DAZ Productions today announced that it is offering its Bryce 5 3D landscaping and animation software for free until September 6th. Following the installation, Bryce 5 prompts users to register the copy at the DAZ website, after which users receive a free Bryce 5 serial number and are able to download the Bryce 5 presets. Bryce 5.0, however, does not work with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Bryce 5.5 -- the latest version -- is optimized for greater speed with support for the DAZ|Studio character plug-in, enhanced OpenGL display modes, and a re-designed network renderer. The DAZ|Studio Character plug-in enables users to easily load, edit, and import any object model. The plug-in features faster load times, increased stability, and more logical grouping when compared to the previous Turbo Import solution. Bryce 5.0 requires Mac OS 8 or later, but is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.4. [corrected]

No Tiger support?

"NOTE: Bryce 5.0 does not run under Mac OS X Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.6)"
What up with that?

The free version that you can download (5.0.3) runs fine under Tiger. However, note that this is version 5.0.3, not 5.5 as it seems that 5.5 is a paid upgrade, although the MacNN article gives the impression that the version you can download for free is 5.5, which it is not.

Their web site doesn't point the way to any information on that. If it's true this is a truly stupid promotion.

Downloaded it, installed and registered the free Bryce 5 and it works fine in 10.4.7 on a Dual G5 2.5gHz. Hate that interface design with a passion however... identical to Poser and Carrara, which all originate at MetaCreations in the late 1990's. Just hate it... good software though.

Upgrade to 5.5 for $20?
08/22, 07:41pm reply
That's disappointing that the free version isn't supported on 10.4 (though it appears from the comments here that it may well work). However, here's an interesting twist: On the page linked from the article above, there's a limited time special to upgrade to Bryce 5.5 for US$19.95, or $100.00 off the regular upgrade price. You just have to sign up for Art Zone by Sept. 6, the same date this free promotion ends. (I can't tell for certain, but it appears Art Zone is a free sign-up.)
So, I wonder, does this free copy qualify for the special Art Zone upgrade price of US$19.95? If so, then this freebie offer costs $20 to get 10.4 compatibility, but that's still a sweet deal. Think I'll go ahead and take a chance.

Upgrade

The 5.5 upgrade available to ArtZone members (free registration) does allow you upgrade from the free version 5.
However, even if you don't want to spend the $20 for the program (I agree with jacquesdav the interface is horrid) you may want to go through the process all the way up to submitting the order as it gave me a 119.95 discount...yes it was free.
So although it was, to me, worth the $20 to get it and have it to use where I need it. I got a nice surprise at the end of the process.

How long did it take after you signed up at DAZ to get an e-mail? I registered and was supposed to get an e-mail to activate the account, but nothing as yet after a couple of hours.

Seems to work on my Aluminum PB running 10.4.7 and 768 RAM. Ran the DAZ process and got a checkout with $19.95 on the credit card. Since I've only got $3 in my pay pal at the moment, I'll have to hold off =-D

'works' may be subjective

I've just got it up and running here on 10.4. It works fine, until you actually try and save or print, or open another document. The standard OS dialog boxes get drawn 'behind' the app's full screen interface, so you can't access them. I don't know if this was fixed with 5.5 but as it stands it makes it next to unusable.
