Apple announces 2006 Apple Scholars

Apple has announced the 2006 Apple Scholars, selecting "ten winners out of an overwhelming number of applicants," according to the company's webpage. The program selected the 10 college-bound high school students based on each student's innovative use of technology in academics. The winners included Nick Biere, John Coburn, Michelle Crowther, Paul Ginart, Vicki Hsu, Mitchell Murphy Raj Ranade, Zoe Ross-Silverman, Lauren Williamson, and Muthanna Yacoub. Apple, however, did not provide any highlights or details on their use of technology. The company will give each winner a MacBook Pro, iPod nano, and $2000 cash as they head to campus this fall.

Hardly fair. What about those of us students who embrace technology outside of school, including coding for Apple's platform, but where technology use is all but banned from our schools? We aren't allowed to use laptops, PDAs, anything. I've been unallowed to use any sort of technology for any project in school, even when I asked. I've even been marked down for laying out a "newspaper" in Pages. And don't get me started on the time I nearly got suspended for giving a friend a copy of Ubuntu. It's rather hard to embrace technology in a school run by technophobes.

Then you go to a different school where they do allow such a technology and where they teach you that the English word is disallowed instead of unallowed. As for the Apple scholars, I'm happy for them. Good from them!! More knowledge better products. Sometimes fresh minds give new breath in company.

Some of those kids who used to go to MacHack should have won scholarships.
