updated 07:15 pm EDT, Tue August 15, 2006

Apple updates Boot Camp

Apple today released an update to Boot Camp, its beta technology that allows users to startup into Microsoft Windows on Intel-based Macs. Boot Camp 1.1 beta offers many updates and is intended for all new and previous Boot Camp beta users, according to the company. Version 1.1b includes support for the latest Intel-based Macs, easier partitioning using presets for popular sizes, the ability to install Windows XP on any internal disk, iSight camera support, support for built-in microphones, right-click when pressing the right-hand Apple key on Apple keyboards, and improved Apple keyboard support including Delete, PrintScreen, NumLock, and ScrollLock keys. The 202MB download requires Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger or later. Apple notes while users do need to partition their hard drive again, it is very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP. Users can provide feedback to Apple at bootcamp@apple.com to improve future versions of the software.

    Any Hard Drive

Does this mean that with the new Mac Pro, you will be able to put XP on its own hard drive; if so, any chance that a technology will emerge that will allow you to toggle between hard drives, allowing the hardware to be controlled by whichever hard drive you are using? In other words- cut out the need to re-boot?

    Heh, no.

Not a chance. The hard drive is surprisingly independent of the running of an OS. Think about booting off your OS X cd. Once you've booted,it's not constantly using the CD, it's all in memory and caches.

    ------

And next here come the people screaming about having to reformat their XP partitions on the beta software...

    Whats the Point??

Don't waste your time with BootCamp. Get paralells. Its about 98% as fast as running BootCamp, plus you can cut n paste between the two, and share files.

Boot Camp is just a lure for new customers. Paralells is the real deal.

    I like Bootcamp

I still choose Bootcamp over Parallels.

I do agree that Parallels is better for people who need Microsoft Outlook at work or need access to IE 7 because of some web interface that doesn't support industry standards. You're in and out fast.

But I don't trust some applications in Parallels. When I upgrade the firmware on my telescope for instance, it happens through a Keyspan adaptor (USB to Serial). It goes from software to adapter to telescope and I don't necessarily trust a an emulator that could cause my telescope to be rendered useless.

There is some merit to making my computer a legitimate PC. I like it that way and I trust it that way.

Not to mention Bootcamp is free.

    DON'T need to repartition

The copy should read, "...while users don't need to repartition their hard drive again, it is very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP."

    Parallels Camp

I have both Parallels and BoroCamp installed on my iMac Duo. It appears parallels only uses one processor and between OSX and XP uses all of my 2GB of RAM. Sooo, I run Parallels for non-gaming apps and reboot to get full gaming performance. Now if only they would share the same drive/partition/XP installation I'd be overjoyed.

    Isn't There a Way....

....To run Windows Programs Without Installing or running Windows on a Mac? That's what I'm really interested in doing. I thought there was a gaming company making this possible and a few others. That's what I would like to see from parallel. "Lite Windows" for Macintosh. Run windows programs without running Windows. Now that's what's up.
