Video, 1.5 beta for Mac

Skype has released a preview of its video service for Mac OS X as well as updated the release of Skype for Mac 1.5 beta. The functional video pre-release software features support for Apple's iSight as well as Philips and Logitech cameras along with support to video call Windows clients. The new Skype 1.5 beta packs improvements such as a redesigned user interface targeting the contact list, call window, and chat drawer -- designed to better match the Mac environment. A new SkypeOut dialer for mobile and landline calling has been included alogn with better compatibility with Address Book, a quick search, new Skypecasts, and support for seven new international language localizations. Both products are now available to download on the Skype website at no cost.

As a beta version, the Skype Video preview, has known issues such as high CPU load when making video calls, camera detection errors, preference problems while making call, and several more minor issues. Users are encouraged to contact Skype if they find another error.

Skype also announced today its first Mac starter pack. This packs include a USB stereo headset, a Skype unique designed carrying case, and 30 free SkypeOut minutes. There are plans to expand its Mac offerings on its online store to include more accessories. The first Mac pack retails for $25 (£ 13) and is available only to UK customers (status of US version is unknown).

    Oops, someone screwed up!

The Mac Start Kit is apparently only available in the U.K. It is not listed on the U.S. store website and the U.S. distribution house knows nothing about it. And to bet all, in the process I've discovered that Skype provides absolutely no way to contact Skype directly about such issues or other customer service matters. The phone number takes you to the distribution house, a vendor, and there are no other ways to get live, immediate service. So we have a channel implementation s****-up combined with a "don't bother us" customer service attitude. I think maybe I'll stick with The Gizmo Project.

    iChat AV still easier

Skype has been making enormous progress among numerous IM/audio/video conferencing tools out there (where do we start...? AIM, MSN, Yahoo, as well as many smaller players) and has pretty much eclipsed all of them in the field of audio communication. With the recent addition of video on Win, and now on Mac, it is the first realistic competitor to iChat AV on the Mac. I always had trouble getting AIM to work on Win in order to see and hear people I'm talking to that use Mac. While Skype has significantly simpler interface and is much more stable than AIM (on Win), I'm not sure it will make me switch from iChat to Skype for AV conference. Most of my friends and family members overseas already have Macs, so I don't need to force them to download and install AIM. Besides, iChat is just the king. First, the uncomparable reliability; then, 4-way AV conference (Now that everyone has broadband, I tested 3-way and it works amazing - 1 user in NYC, 1 in the Hague, Netherlands, 1 in Belgrade, Serbia!). In addition, the image quality is superior to Skype, which makes full-screen AV conference much more appealing.

All in all, while Skype AV is very welcome, for those less fortunate who are forced to deal with Windows users (and don't want to make them download AIM), for me, iChat is still the best solution for Mac people.

So let me get this str8..

They release a version of Skype with video chat, except there is ZERO interface options for configuring or actually having a video chat. Great product release!

    agreed

iChat is the best, but I am really warming up to Skype. I am kinda blown away by the quality of video here. I have been playing with it with a friend on windows and it actually works very well. I like this new design too.

    video preview

If you don't have any video options, make sure that you have the video preview, and not just the normal 1.5 beta release. (There are two separate versions.)

True, there aren't many options for video chat, but iGlasses takes care of that.
