Video, 1.5 beta for Mac
Skype has released a preview of its video service for Mac OS X as well as updated the release of Skype for Mac 1.5 beta. The functional video pre-release software features support for Apple's iSight as well as Philips and Logitech cameras along with support to video call Windows clients. The new Skype 1.5 beta packs improvements such as a redesigned user interface targeting the contact list, call window, and chat drawer -- designed to better match the Mac environment. A new SkypeOut dialer for mobile and landline calling has been included alogn with better compatibility with Address Book, a quick search, new Skypecasts, and support for seven new international language localizations. Both products are now available to download on the Skype website at no cost.
As a beta version, the Skype Video preview, has known issues such as high CPU load when making video calls, camera detection errors, preference problems while making call, and several more minor issues. Users are encouraged to contact Skype if they find another error.
Skype also announced today its first Mac starter pack. This packs include a USB stereo headset, a Skype unique designed carrying case, and 30 free SkypeOut minutes. There are plans to expand its Mac offerings on its online store to include more accessories. The first Mac pack retails for $25 (£ 13) and is available only to UK customers (status of US version is unknown).

Oops, someone screwed up!
The Mac Start Kit is apparently only available in the U.K. It is not listed on the U.S. store website and the U.S. distribution house knows nothing about it. And to bet all, in the process I've discovered that Skype provides absolutely no way to contact Skype directly about such issues or other customer service matters. The phone number takes you to the distribution house, a vendor, and there are no other ways to get live, immediate service. So we have a channel implementation s****-up combined with a "don't bother us" customer service attitude. I think maybe I'll stick with The Gizmo Project.
