new iMac for education
Apple today introduced a new $899 iMac made specifically for the education market. Replacing Apple's last CRT computer--the eMac--the education-only configuration has a 17-inch widescreen display and a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, featuring many of the same components, such as 512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 24x Combo drive, 80GB hard drive, built-in iSight and wireless networking, microphone, and speakers; however, the new iMac ships with the integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics chipset instead of the usual, dedicated (and more powerful) ATI X16000 found the consumer versions of the new iMac Core Duo. The new education-only iMac configuration ($899) is available immediately from the educational Apple store.
Apple also announced that the eMac will no longer be in production and is available for purchase while supplies last through the Apple Store for Education and that it will showcase the 17-inch iMac and its complete line of products and solutions for education at the National Educational Computing Conference in San Diego, California from July 5-7, 2006.

bad move

OK, I guess I saw this coming, but I know I will NOT be buying the new iMacs for the computer lab I run. Not sure what I am going to do, but I will not put an LCD screen in a room with a bunch of kindy students who just LOVE to push and touch the screen constantly. This behavior in fact doesn't stop until they are in 4th grade. I DO NOT want to switch my lab over to minis with CRTs either. Will have to talk it over with the principal.

Why is it a bad move?

We bought $25 clear shields for our iMacs and it has done a great job at protecting the screens.

pricing seems off

For only another $200, the next 17" iMac in Apples line gives you twice the HD space (160GB vs 80GB) an 8x double-layer DVD burning SuperDrive vs only a CD burner, a dedicated graphics card (ATI Radeon X1600 with 128MB) vs a shared 64MB card and built in Bluetooth 2.0 vs none....
Is the "retail edu price" of $899 for this e-iMac just a number that will be vastly discounted to look great in deals with schools?

monitor touching

monitor touchers should learn not to touch monitors. they should keep their hands to themselves. even with a crt, they leave their filthy smudges all over.
this machine seems like a nice price point for a seriously powerful machine.

good stuff

I think this is great - most people who use a computer will NEVER need an X1600 video card.
The guy has a good point about screen touching - but a screen guard should do the trick.
Guess this shows how much we actually pay for that graphics card, eh?

Slap those little fingers nice and hard with a ruler. Surely the teachers are still allowed to have rulers, right?
One or two finger slaps and guess what? No more touching

can you say lawsuit!?!?
07/05, 01:02pm reply
freakboy2, I wish it would be that easy to teach 5 year olds, but when they are next to someone, they like to say "Look at this!" and touch the screen where they are pointing.
As far as shocking them, would love to, but would get sued. And yes they let teachers have rulers, but NO they can not use them to slap the fingers, again, lawsuit. but trust me, I know lots of teachers who would love to be able to do this!
It actually goes back to the parents at home, my 5 year old girl doesn't touch the screen on my 1GHz 17" iMac, as I have taught her NOT to.
