Custom-colored MacBooks

ColorWare today began shipping MacBooks with a custom color coating that features a glossy finish. The "X2" scratch resistant coating is available in nearly two dozen colors, and adds protection from everyday wear and tear. The coating is guaranteed to be completely stain-proof, and will not fade in time, according to the company. ColorWare also unveiled five new colors to join its current selection which include "Jade Green," "Orange Crush," "Cobalt Blue," "Coffee Brown," and "Fusion Pink." The custom-colored 13.3-inch MacBook is available with a 1.83GHz ($1,750) or 2.0GHz ($1950 or $2,150, depending on configuration) Intel Core Duo processor, featuring 512MB of memory with a 60GB or 80GB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive and a Combo drive or SuperDrive. All color-coated MacBooks ship in approximately 2-3 weeks.

    pricey

And we thought Apple's price on the black MacBook case was expensive? Isn't that a roughly $500 markup -- all for a pretty colored case?

I mean, they look great, but....

    That's some premium!

$650 USD for a custom colour?

Some people have more money than brains.

    Hahaha

That's 60% markup on the cheapest one.

Also, you can pay them to paint it white or black. :)

    White and Black

Among the color choices are white and black! I am sure their painting process yields a different look overall, but $650 for essentially the same color tone?

    no aluminum?

Oh and there's no MacBook Pro-style aluminum color choice (steel and sand come closest, but not similar enough).

    Get it for free

Why not just buy a white one and let it turn "coffee brown" on its own?

    color

some americans have to have their razr/ipod/macbook and vw beetle to all match in the exact same shade (like this one girl and a frightening shade of pepto pink - including lawn chairs).

    Not impressed with them..

I ordered my son's iPod to be painted black, and it was painted yellow instead. They swore I selected yellow but did not. It wasn't worth shipping back to them for the hassle, although I wish I had.

Also, the price was cheaper back then but they've raised the prices since then. I wouldn't pay the $68 (give or take) for what I used to be able to pay for only $50.

p.s. Its a cool concept but I think they realize they're the only ones in town and are sticking it to people.
