NewerTech Universal Drive Adapter

Newer Technology (NewerTech) today introduced the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter. The device is a single-source solution to allow any 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, or 5.25-inch hard drive or optical drive mechanism with standard IDE/ATA/ATAPI 40 pin or any Serial-ATA interface to be plug-and-play accessible via USB. Offering transfer speeds of up to 480Mb/sec, the adapter is backwards compatible to provide USB 1.1 connectivity. Allowing quick connection of hard drives and optical drives, the drive adapter includes all necessary hardware for plug-and-play of supported storage devices to any Mac or PC with an available USB port. No software is required for the use of the adapter on any Mac system running Mac OS 8.6 or later, and a CD is included with drivers for Windows-based systems. The NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter ships for $25.

Can't Partition or Erase

I eagerly awaited arrival of two of these univeral adapters from NewerTech. The idea of using my loose drives as backup units was great. Unfortunately, I have not been able to partition or erase drives attached using the adpaters. This despite trying with four different 2.5 inch ATA drives, three Macs (iBook, PowerBook AL, and MacBook), OS 10.46 and 10.3x, both adapters, etc. Disk Utility simply becomes unresponsive if I try to erase or partition a drive. I can access pre-exisiting files and manipulate them in Finder, but emptying out a drive and reformatting has not worked yet.

OWC sent out two RMA replacement adapters. Something is definitely awry with this product. Disk Utility will never get past partitioning a drive connected vis the new adapters. This is under 10.4.7 and with both a PB Aluminum and a MacBook. NOT RECOMMENDABLE!.

I bought a replacement laptop AC adapter about a month ago from www.laptopsforless.com and it works great. Is this new laptop AC adapter that much better?
