Apple updates SuperDrive firmware

SuperDrive firmware update


Apple today released SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.0, fixing burning speeds when writing to certain recordable DVD media. The update requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, and is offered as a one-click installation. Users who meet the system requirements but who cannot update the firmware are encouraged to contact their local Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Store retail location. Apple also warns users not to reset, shut down, or turn off power to a Mac while updating the firmware, as doing so may damage the SuperDrive. The update is available as a free download from Apple.

    failed

    I've tried to update my 17" PB G4 1.67GHz DL and it said "no device found that requires this update."

    Anybody else?

    "No Devise"

    I also tried the firmware update with my 1.67GHz 15" PB w/Superdrive and received "No Devise found that requires update"...Next step took it to the Genius Bar here in San Francisco, they were stumped also and didn't have any further information...so looks like we'll all be waiting to see what Apple does next about this.

    Update

    Well, I installed the update along with QuickTime. I've only burned one DVD, and that was a data DVD a long time ago.

    One day, I suppose I'll find out if I have "problems" with speed.

    Not able to install

    I have to hear the first person who is able to install this, because on my PowerBook G4 (12 -inch 1.5GHz) it gives the same message: not the required hardware found.

    Matshita UJ-835E

    This update should fix the Matshita UJ-835E as well as another Matshita model (but not 825E). The problem was, that the drive would switch to a "safe" burning mode, burning media only at 2x speed, if the media didn't meet the expected specifications. This would happen also with newer 16x quality media from Verbatim and the like, since the drive expects 8x media.

    I didn't install it yet but I hope it will fix the issue. 8x quality DVD-R media are already hard to find nowadays...

    Installed but no change

    I have some Fuji DVD-R 8X but still burning at 2x from Toast 7.0.2 , tried a DVD+RW that was suppose to be 8x but still only 2x. The burning speed was the same prior to the update. I don't have other DVD media but seems to be the same.

    Matshita UJ-835E Update

    After the update the Verbatim 16x DVD-R are finally recognized as "quality" media and burn at 8x speed.

    Superscow, if you don't have any success with Fuji, then they probably don't meet those tough "requirements" of the drive anyway. Besides of Apple's own brand, Verbatim media are definively known that they will work with this drive.
