Apple firmware updates
Apple today posted new firmware for its previously released Intel-based Macs, including the iMac Core Duo, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro. Apple says the SMC Firmware Update addresses intermittent boot issues. It is available for the iMac Core Duo (1MB), MacBook Pro (1MB), and Mac Mini (1MB). Apple says that SMC firmware update starts automatically, while a status bar indicates the progress of the update. "During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes. Important: Do not interrupt the update. Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update."

What is SMC? I've had no boot issues with my MBP. I wonder if I should update? What's SMC?

You couldn't do a better job than telling him that SMC stood for System Management Controller? That tells me little more than SMC did.

I've had some odd boot issues with my iMac and an external FW drive.
Hope this fixes it. I puts me into a complete panic every time my lovely new Intel iMac does something odd.
Maybe I just need therapy.

I don't think SMC means anything in this case. "SMC Firmware" means "System management controller firmware." The firmware is for managing the system controller, so that means the same thing as "firmware."
In short, no details at all.

I was wondering the same thing.. Normally, in journalism, you're not supposed to use unknown acronyms without explaining them at least once before reusing them...
The ironic thing is that they explain what SATA means in an article on the same page...
