ABM opens Apple store

Arab Business Machine (ABM) -- Apple's independent marketing company in the Middle East -- has announced the opening of its second store in the United Arab Emirates, in Abu Dhabi. Sales of Apple systems and devices have steadily increased across the Middle East, according to AME Info. The new store will offer the entire Apple product line, and is to be organized into zones for movies, photos, music, and children. "ABM is proud to finally announce that we are opening a store in the nations capital," Arab Business Machines general manager Elias Abou Rustom said. "It was inevitable that Abu Dhabi would get its own Apple Center and we can promise that all that is available in our other dedicated stores worldwide will be accessible here. In much the same fashion as our Dubai store, our new one will be unique in terms of customer service, product offerings and general ambience."

    hey apple

i walked into an apple reseller in the middle east and a macbook pro entry model sells for $2800, an ipod 30gig sells for $550, it is insanely expensive over there. i doubt that apple sales are picking up there at all. I know lots of people who wanna get a mac, but they all change their mind when they see a mac mini going for $1100.. apple is ignoring that area pretty bad, u hear me steve? send us some cheap macs. a dell there sells $100 more than the US so is gateway, hp and other PCs

well, they are, it's true, you're wrong: http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/06/01/19/10012500.html

furthermore, the market over there, particularly in the uae, consists of folks who can't afford a computer, and then people who can afford the most expensive computers. lastly, there are considerable taxes on U.S. products that increase the price.

this has nothing to do with competing with Dell. it's about selling up-market -- and they're doing very well.

    Talk about the hand

I recall the Mac UI guidelines from a few years back recommending to not show parts of the human body in the UI, because these were considered offensive in the Middle East.

Now that all web browsers feature floating hands for mouse pointers, I was wondering how they were getting on with these over there.

Does anybody know? Bartman, care to comment?
