Gefen unveils home theater adapters

Gefen has unveiled two new audio and video adapters that enabler users to integrate various hardware into a modern home theater. The DVI Audio to HDMI Adapter (shown at right) connects DVI home theater devices or DVI video graphic cards to HDMI compliant digital monitors. The DVI Audio to HDMI Adapter features one DVI, one TOSlink, and one S/PDIF input connector. Users can send HD video to a display with digital audio in TOSlink and S/PDIF formats, while the HDMI display and audio receiver connect to the unit's digital outputs. Installation is plug-and-play with the unit running on its own 5-volt power supply. The DVI Audio to HDMI Adapter is available for pre-order for $300.

The Component Audio to HDMI Adapter connects component sources or VGA computers to an HDMI display, patching HD video together with two channels of audio (left and right). Both adapters are HDCP pass-through compliant, allowing users to view protected content with no resolution degradation, and each adapter is designed to provide a simple technique for linking incompatible interfaces without additional software or networking. The Component Audio to HDMI Adapter are available for pre-order for $200.

This is pretty sweet (combining digital audio and video into one HDMI A/V feed), and certainly wouldn't mind having one if I had the spare coin. But, for the price, I'll stick with my ~$50 Sonica Theater, DVI/HDMI cable setup. Granted, I "only" have S/PDIF running to the receiver and because the Sonica is USB it probably puts a little strain on the mini (plus there is some driver configuring to do), but movies still look and sound great for 1/6 the price.

Visit ebay and search for 'dvi to hdmi' and you can find tons of adapters and cables for less than $5. And like the other guy said, the usb sonica to coax/optical can be had for cheap. Don't get ripped off.
