"G6" Mac clones surface

\"G6\" Mac clones surface

At least one vendor in South America is illegally selling generic clones called "PowerPC G6 Macintosh" and "Apple G6 Macintosh-Clone" systems using Apple's name. The rogue machines contain a 3.8GHz Pentium 4 processor and come bundled with loads of OSx86-compatible software, according to The Inquirer. Shipping pre-loaded with system software called "Mac OSX-86 Apple MacOS X Tiger 10.4.3," the clones are being manufactured in China as well as South America. Members from the OSx86 Project discovered the illegal computers, according to the report, which are selling for $500.

I hope all the X86-ers are happy now. Their (valiant) efforts to get OSX running (illegally) on non-Apple hardware has produced the inevitable result: low-brow PC chancers (criminals) who will do little to help the future of Mac and OSX. If anything, their actions may cause harm to the reputation if not the bottom line of Apple. For gawds sake, if you want OSX stop being a whining tightwad and buy a goddam Mac! It's like a guy complaining that he wants a Ferrari but only wants to pay FIAT prices, get real! Quality costs money!

I wouldn't expect this operation to live more than 5 business days. Since they are doing their business from a developed country (USA), they will probably be shut down within next week or so.

As a matter of fact, if you go to this guy's web-site (redpcs.com), you'll get a blank page with a terse message 'Server down'. Therefore, let's not get all worked up (this refers to 'feathers' above), as this will amount to exactly nothing. As for rest of the world, there is a chance that some people will begin building these bootleg 'Macs', just as they do bootleg Windows (I'm talking third world). While this in theory is wrong, in real world, this might actually raise the exposure level for Apple/Mac where there might have never been any. I know from personal experience (small south-east-European country) that they have no clue what Mac is (perhaps a 1000 users in a 2-million city). More Macs there (even illegal ones) might mean more educated people who've seen the light.

It is interesting how people in the USA and across the world side with the criminals. It is like someone saved the day when they stole the 54" widescreen HDTV from a house. So every poor disadvantaged soul who was forced to turn to crime because of their circumstances can watch the Superbowl with their free cable service. I think schools in third world countries are more likely to receive computers running Windows 98 than buy a Mac clone at $500 a piece.

And they're not even afraid to put their US address right on the web page... I guess they're too dumb to realize this is extremely likely to cost them serious jail time if they actually sold these computers.

Of course the poor schmucks who bought them will also have a surprise the first time they OK the system update and their "G6" doesn't restart...

This isn't a hoax really since the Pioneer DVD RW model included is one of the best compatible models working on OS X.

Either a insightful joke (unlikely!) or we deal with minus IQ levels.

just a thought

i would buy it, i mean for $99 more get a Mac,

But for $99 Less, you get HD expandability, Space for an Upgradable AGP card,

I mean, Apple Just went backwards with Expandability, My PC is better future proof than my Mac,

And Mac Mini's Have a life of about 1.5 years before they and Desk Junks.

If this were a real mac, even at twice the price, it would sell like hot cakes. (Forgetting the bundled software and all). Expandable. Video card swappable. PCI slots. Room to grow. No built-in monitor. Its what most die-hard mac owners want!

Which is why Apple would never sell a computer like this. They can't stand the thought of people buying their computers...Especially ones where you get expandability for so little price. Their motto: "You want a second hard drive, spend $2000!"

I have a G4 Sawtooth with 4 hardrives and i use it to store all my Mini's backup + movies plush Songs, with room to spare.

My stupid mini, is completely slow at running tiger, it stalls all the time, when compared to my sawtooth 450Mhz and i find that most Macs are basically un-upgradable. I really wanted a G5 but the non standard hard drive and lack of expandability was a turn off, so i bought a PC for 1800 (AU) 1200 (US) and it kills anything the G5 has to offer.

Its Sad to buy a PC, but when Apple has nothing to offer, its the only option.

It's FAKE! Click to enlarge the picture. This picture had been PhotoShop'ed. Look closely at the buttons and LCD display, the perspective, the shadows, and the blurriness are not consistent. Do you see anyone on eBay or anywhere else selling it?

I would happily pay Apple $500 for a copy of OSX I could run on MY choice of desktop or laptop. I don't want a huge bulky vacuum cleaner, an inconvenient all-in-one that doesn't work with my switchbox, or a crippled unexpandible mini with an intel GPU. I don't want a super-thin overheating laptop with a crummy keyboard and a one-boutton touchpad. I just want a regular desktop computer like my old beige G3, or a laptop with a normal full-sized keyboard and TWO MOUSE BUTTONS like my Thinkpad T23.
