Weak future iPod sales?

Analyst firm Cowen & Company maintained a "neutral" rating on Apple after receiving mixed readings in its latest consumer survey, according to one report. "While Intel CPU transition challenges appear more fully discounted, [the] survey suggests potential for significant slowing in iPod growth," analyst Richard Chu wrote in a research note. Chu believes Apple still faces Intel-based Mac transition execution challenges, but his concern has subsided due to conservative Mac unit trends, according to a report from Forbes.com. "Indeed, despite more cautious home PC demand overall, Mac prospects look strong," Chu said. The survey outlook over the next 12 to 18 months for Digital Audio Player -- specifically iPod -- demand is obviously weaker, according to the analyst, despite a sturdy Apple-specific share situation and iPod ecosystem spending outlook.

"That is enough of a caveat to keep us on the sidelines on the stock," Chu said. "Given the twin visible axes of its game plan, the Mac and iPod, there can be little question that the stock will tend to fare best when there is perceived to be relatively clear sailing on both fronts."

    Survey says this survey i

Survey says this survey is WRONG, like the last time and the time before that and before that. How many times have they said iPod sales would go down and yet everytime they have increased or stayed steady.

    Don't see any

obstacles for iPod/iTunes/iTMS, in terms of competition. But there may be a relative lack of demand because so many new customers bought iPods during the last six months. However, that situation will no doubt change with the next round of updates, including the often-rumored "video" iPod. Apple's stock price today seems to be "discounting" this survey.

Apple needs to figure out an elegant way make iPod usable without using it with a computer. Some inexpensive consumer-oriented device would need to fulfill the functions of iTunes on a computer (including CD drive and connection to iTMS) . That would be one way to increase sales by hugely increasing the potential customer base. We're all computer savvy here, but there are still a lot of people (music lovers included) who are perfectly happy to stay away from the Internet and "PCs" as much as possible.

    They'll be right...

eventually. Someday, iPod sales will slow. Keep saying it, and one day you'll be able to say, "I told you so!"

    It will happen

Say what you will, but realistic economic thinking (based on past records) show that all items have a life-span. It isn't a question of IF the iPod sales will slow, but simply when. They CANNOT last forever. Having said that, the iPod has only been around for 5 years, so I figure there is a bit of steam left in in.

Weak iPod sales is not the same thing as "slowing growth". A false leader.
