Popwire's WMV-9 Component for Mactels

Popwire is proud to announce a major update to the WMV-9 Component for Mac OS X and QuickTime to bring compatibility with Intel-based Macs. With the WMV-9 Component 2.0, in QuickTime you can now import, view and export Windows Media content to any format supported by QuickTime 6.5.2 or later. “This means that Popwire now offers the first Windows Media plugin for Quicktime with import/export functionality, supporting both Power PC and Intel based Macintosh computers. And with this also a free way for everyone, regardless of what model of Macintosh they are running Mac OS X on, to watch Windows Media content with QuickTime” said Anders Wannfors, CTO at Popwire. The unlicensed version of WMV Component 2 lets you import and view Windows Media content without any limitations, while export functionality is available for $50.

How is this different from Flip4Mac's offering (assuming they deliver on their promise for a MacTel version soon?)

It's here now, that's the difference. Haven't looked at the pricing stucture, but it may be better. Also the import and direct save might just save the straight windows media file that is compatible w/ wmp instead of the thing that flip4mac throws out. Short of grabbing all your urls w/ something like anarchy, this might be a good bet for maintaining local content w/o locking it and requiring an export or a specific tool...closer to a standard?

No internet plugin

After just trying out Popwire, I have to say Flip4Mac is a better product based solely on the fact that it has an internet plugin, whereas Popwire does not. So if you want to use popwire, you'll still have to use Flip4Mac or the aging Windows Media Player 9 in order to view/listen to Windows Media content on websites like CNN and Sirius (or the numerous other sites out there).

Not only does Flip4Mac have a browser plugin. It supports more WMV variants. Popwire only supports WMV9.

Flip4Mac supports WMV9, WMV8, WMV7, Microsoft MPEG4v2, Microsoft MPEG4V3, ISO MPEG4v1.0, ISO MPEG4v1.1 and several AVI formats.

Flip4Mac exports Standard WMV9 files (technohedz implies otherwise). Flip4Mac also allows one to affordably step up to 2pass CBR/VBR encoding, WMV9 Advanced as well as HD frame sizes and Surround Sound.

With all those additional features to support it might take a little longer for them to get the Universal version out.
