Verbatim unveils 16MB FlashDisc

Verbatim has unveiled the Verbatim16MB FlashDisc, a new product developed by M-Systems designed to facilitate data exchange. The device offers a traditional media-like disc design with circular features and hard plastic exterior. A recessed area provides a write-on user label, and a snap-on cap protects the connector from accidental damage. FlashDiscs include a USB 2.0-compatible interface for simple plug-and-play operation, and are based on the same technology as USB flash drives. FlashDiscs weigh roughly 0.3 ounces and measure 2.35-inches in diameter with a height of 0.35-inches. FlashDiscs are compatible with Mac OS 9.x, 10.x, Linux, and Microsoft Windows systems. The discs are priced at $20 for a multi-color three-pack, and are slated for shipment in April.

Useless Product

Well, this is a completely useless product. Why not just use a smaller, and higher capacity Thumb drive? 16MB is way to small to be useful (four songs) maybe one or two videos?

This sort of falls into the category of "If I owned stock in the company, I want my money back."

16GB would of course be a different story :)

When CDs are cheap and hold 700MB, and there are plenty of thumb drives and other flash cards/usb adapters out there, what is the point of this product?

16MB is more than sufficient -- and getting 48MB of storage for $20 ain't bad for flash -- for STUDENTS in COLLEGES to move WORD FILES from laptop to COMMUNITY DESKTOP FOR PRINTING. Sheesh, just because you have the most expensive system on the planet does not mean everyone else using a computer moved 30MB files around. Even I think it's an utter waste to burn a 600kb driver to a CD, takes longer too. This is the 21st century floppy disk: a quick and easy fix to move data from computer to computer, across platforms, without losing a lot of money. It's designed large so it's not as easily lost as the uber-geeky flash drives are, and this is generally the only way the typical consumer will want to buy media: in a 3 pack, in an easy to locate case that they will not lose, with a label to write on. I'm already thinking of these as stocking stuffers for this year's Christmas. Just because you're so gordo with your files doens't mean everyone else is. You sound like typical Americans: bigger always means better, get a grip.

Yeah, you typical americans.

Bawahahahaha

16 MB is worthless when you can get 512MB on Ebay for $20

If it's smaller than that, just email it to whoever needs it. Even yourself, then retieve it from the other system.

Why are we morons because we disagree with you?

I can easily buy a 256MB flash disk for less almost anywhere, with no moving parts. I cannot say it is more reliable or less reliable, but moving parts generally mean less reliable.

Again, the market will determine if this product sells, and I sincerely think this is going to be a no-go.

"...designed to facilitate data exchange." IMO target audience would be students up to (but not including) high-school, free-lance copywriters, and those who frequent internet cafés (storing brower prefs, etc.). Yeah pretty narrow market. Unless we're missing some part of the picture, I'm not really sure why this is news.

This is just a flash drive in a disc-shaped package. It's non-news.

Reminds me of Kodak's last stand against cheap digital cameras... remember disc film?

Lots of college students already have flash drives. Many of them are on their keychains, this is too big to fit in your pocket with your keys, which means it goes in your bag... a likely easier place to get lost, and not so convenient.

16mb is too small for the pile of word files, PDF files of /scanned/ material and power points that most students need to carry. Sure you get 3, but who wants to have a different one for each subject.

The label is largely useless also, as contents of these things change day to day.

The Zip drive used to be everywhere, now no one here uses it. This has most of the drawbacks and no where near the storage.

College student says "forget it"
