Plaxo for Mac client now in public beta

Plaxo today announced the public beta of its popular contact management software for Mac OS X. Plaxo for Mac represents "a major step toward the company's vision to offer the first truly universal personal contact management service, accessible on any platform, email client, browser, or mobile device," according to the company. Plaxo now supports full integration with the Mac, America Online, Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. In addition, Plaxo members can build their Plaxo address book by importing contacts from their Netscape, Palm, Yahoo! Mail, and Hotmail accounts. With the new Plaxo for Mac, users of Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" can synchronize their Mac address book with their Plaxo address book to maintain up-to-date contact information. The free Plaxo for Mac, now in beta, allows Mac users to synchronize home and work computers, providing secure access to their information from anywhere, via any web-enabled device.

Plaxo will mail your list without advising you first. I tried the software today and had friends calling me this evening to ask why I was giving out their addresses. Further the new OS X software will upload your entire AddressBook file during the initial setup routine and only offer you the option to block syncing for certain groups after the fact.

Well, it didn't send any emails to anyone on my list - accept other Plaxo members saying that my details had been updated - which is the whole point right?

Also, remember that this is BETA software. If you don't like something it does send feedback

How Plaxo Works

Hi dubohun. I'm hoping this is just a misunderstanding and perhaps we've failed to make it clear how Plaxo works. The purpose of the software is to sync your local information with your Plaxo account. I suppose this is similar to how .MAC works, though I'm not as familiar with that service. Plaxo then automatically updates entries in your Plaxo account that match other Plaxo members (assuming they have given you permission). The software syncs these updates back down to your local address book so you always have the latest information locally. This process happens on a continual basis whenever changes/updates occur.

As for sending emails to your contacts without your permission, jbracy is correct. Plaxo does not send email to anyone on your list. Plaxo may update and alert other Plaxo members with your updated details based on your own privacy settings, but certainly we do not mail anyone without your instructions and permission.

If you have further questions or concerns, please let us know!
