Tech support in India
As noted previously, Apple is working to setup a new tech support center in India. A new report says that Apple will hire as many as 1,500 people by the end of this year and is expected to have a total of 3,000 employees by the end of 2007 in its Bangalore facility. "Sources say the Bangalore facility is being set up for Apple by property developer RMZ Corp in its EcoSpace property on the outer ring road near Marathahalli." The report says that RMZ is developing a 150,000 square-foot facility in the first phase and another 150,000 square-foot in the second phase. The report says that the operations would begin within the next two months and that the decision to set up the facility in Bangalore was "taken after a rigorous examination of seven cities in India. The tech support centre is expected to be on the lines of the one that Dell has in India."

I sure as h*** am NOT going to pay for support from Apple when I cannot understand the person I am speaking with. Especially considering the hundreds of people that will probably be without work in Austin because of this. Anything to save ten cents. Heck with that, I will pay my local Apple reseller for extended support. They actually give a c*** about the end-user.

How many Americans will lose their jobs over the next couple of years because of this?

not just that...

Sadly, this is the end of good support from Apple. I have never ever had anything but terrible support from Indian support centers. Maybe Apple can do something different, but it doesnt' sound like it. the next step is that we'll be sending our laptops to India for repair! So sad, much much worse news than the intel switch....but maybe, just like Apple using intel, this will turn out better than expected. maybe.

Once again corporate America ships off it's jobs to the lowest bidder. I am disapointed in Apple for following this lead, when all we have left in this great country is Walmart and Mc Donalds then maybe we can re-evaluate our decisions. Bad Move

as bad as Dell?

Does this mean 'customer support' will be as bad as Dell? Ever tried ringing one of these? You can't understand them, they can't understand you. Very bad move from a supposedly 'premium' computer company like Apple.

I know several Dell-> Mac switchers that choose a Mac at least partially due to Apple's US based support. Pick up a phone a talk to someone you can understand and that can understand you. Believe it or not, for many having issues with a Dell, it's a *huge* selling point...
It's not a xenophobia thing. Clear communication is a necessity to tech support.. If someone is technically challenged, has a problem with their computer, then can't understand the person on the other end of the line, that they're paying to talk to.... It's a recipe for very dissatisfied customers..
A very short sighted move by Apple. (or at the very least Apple's bean counters)

Americans are becoming soulless consumers of everything they want and don't need. Corporate America is happy to feed the frenzy and balances make all this junk cheap as heck while keeping an eye on the bottom line. Where will it all end? Support small privately owned companies in your town. True innovation and the best service comes from the little guy/gal. Spend a few dollars more to keep our economic power in our control. I'm all for developing countries but labor laws in some of the places is what we had 100 years ago. It a complex issue with no easy answers.

I work at an Apple store, and you have no idea how many times I'm asked "do my support phone calls go to India?" Apparently I can no longer respond with a resounding "NO!" Sucks...

Over the last 20 years I have owned at least 20 Macs. Right now, i own 4, 2 Powerbooks, 1 Mini and 1 Intel Mini. Since they've opened the local store here in The Bridgewater Commons Mall in NJ, I have not experienced anything their geniuses couldn't correct. None of my Macs ever broke, they just needed some tweaking. They never made me feel stupid and were always curteous. For those of us lucky enough to live near one of their stores, WHO NEEDS INDIA for support.
