MS Origami to take on iPod, Apple?

MS Origami project
A new Microsoft project code-named Origami may help the company dethrone the iPod. The portable entertainment device, designed as more than just a music player, would help the company and its partners stem the growing influence of the iPod and Apple in the digital music and video industries. Origami involves various partners to build services and software for a new portable entertainment device, according to The Wall Street Journal. Though the project is styled after Microsoft's Tablet PC, the 'ulta-portable' PC-like device would be geared toward consumers, rather than business users. "Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has been a huge promoter of the Tablet PC, which is geared more toward business users than consumers and hasn't sold in high volumes. The Origami project appears to be an extension of the Tablet PC into the consumer market." [registration required]

One of the biggest selling points of the iPod is it's size. If this new MS product is much bigger than the current line of iPod's, then it'll never fly.

The iPod is successfull.
Therefore if we make something that is bigger, heavier, and with a color screen, and running Windows, it will blow the iPod away. Oh yeah, price it at 3 times the price of the iPod while you are at it, and have it designed and manufactured by our channel partners, like Creative...

It's just another name for a crumpled up piece of paper that will soon be heading toward the trash can.

that URL doesn't have the Origami... it has XBOX... so is this device the portable XBOX (the single only device I can imagine could overthrow iPod and PSP)? A portable XBOX might throw PSP and iPod, might. I don't think there are enough gamers out there, though, to make it happen.

What I do not understand is why companies think that people who have already invested money (up to $399) in ipods, music, peripherals etc. will suddenly say...Hmmm, now I want to start all over with some other product. It just does not happen.
There are millions of iPods already sold. I know not everyone has one, but it certainly seems like it.
