Olympic iPods offer free ads for Apple

Free ads for Apple

Apple is getting some free publicity at the Olympics, as atheletes listen to and promote their iPod during the games in Italy. "But the biggest winner of all may have been Apple, maker of the tiny iPod that soared to glory along with Teter. This Olympics, U.S. snowboarders have competed while listening to the personal music device, and skiers, speed skaters and other Olympians from all over the world have been observed listening raptly during practice and before competing.... All of which makes for great press." While Apple said it does not target atheletes, the iPod is a "sponsorship waiting to happen," according to once Olympic Committee spokesperson. "One of the lasting images of these games is going to be these snowboarders with their iPods," said Abraham Madkour, executive editor of SportsBusiness Journal, a trade magazine that covers the sports industry. "It's the perfect form of subconscious marketing."

...despite the good press Apple has received from these events, Mac users around the world are being seen in a lesser light due to their inability to spell the word ATHLETE. Perhaps when the iPod is upgraded with a voice-activated spell-checker, Mac users, or should we say "useres", will finally be viewed as the inteleligenete peopele theye areee...

Apple Missed Olympic Gold

02/21, 10:53pm reply

Normally all I have to say is good things about Apple but today I'm being more critical. Apple missed a big opportunity this week. There are no celebrity playlists from the Olympics. In fact, the iTunes store has no mention of the Olympics at all. While it is true that Apple did gain a notable amount of free exposure from the the athletes sporting iPods at the games, they didn't follow through. Its what they're listing to that will turn exposure into dollars. Right now, Sasha Cohen is warming up listening to her iPod. I went to iTunes for her Celebrity Playlist and nothing. It's really not that hard to add athletes to their celebrity playlist section. The same goes for Shawn White and Hana Teter. Shawn won gold in the mens half pipe wearing an iPod. In an interview afterward he reportedly was listening to AC/DC, but what song? Can't I buy it? I like snow boarding. I'd buy his playlist. If Apple intends to keep making inroads into popular culture and our living room they're going to need to seize opportunities like this, not miss them.
