10M Macs in 2006?

Apple may ship a total of 10 million desktop PCs and notebooks in 2006, doubling the more than 4.5 million Macs it shipped in its 2005 fiscal year. The Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) reports that Apple's major contract makers Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry), Quanta Computer and Asustek Computer are expected to benefit from the increased sales as Apple transitions to the new Intel-based architecture. Digitimes notes that Foxconn manufactures Apple's Mac mini computers, Quanta holds orders for the PowerBook series and Asustek has orders for Apple’s iBook models. The EDN report further noted that Quanta also manufactures Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro. Foxconn also manufacturers the CRT-based iMacs, while Quanta produces the flat-panel iMacs.

    all right!

10 million macs to be sold this year? That's on the right track. 20 million in 2007?

    Yeah, right!

I'll believe it when I see it. This report is somehow coming from Taiwan saying "We're making a lot of macs". But there's no info here at all about actual projections (and I can't believe Apple wouldn't be trumpeting even a couple million more projected sales).

You don't double your PC marketshare in one year, esp. a year of transition where the compatibility and 1st rev issues will keep people from buying.

Oh, and this comes from the article:

For the desktop PC segment, iMac models featuring CRT displays are produced by Foxconn, whereas Quanta manufactures the LCD panel-based iMac series, according to the EDN report.

There are no iMac models with a CRT display.

    right...

    Testudo, m'man,

The intel transition hasn't slowed things down yet. If anything, we're over the hump. 10 million might be an optimistic stretch, but folks are lining up to buy the intel macs in droves. December's quarter was a record for macs sold, even with people waiting for the new macs to come out. I would say the floodgates are now open.

It's so unlike you to be nitpicking, testudo!!

Surely they meant eMac, logically, since that is the only CRT based Macs being produced today.

    Another Misprint,

Wow, I am...so shocked. Another misprint on this site. Editor, take note, the eMac is the only Mac with a CRT in it. Maybe you should know the platform if you are going to write about it. Seriously, what has happened to this site?
