SteveScan 2.0

Steve Software has released SteveScan 2.0. Available for free download, SteveScan allows users to continue to use the single-user version of Virex 7-- no longer available from McAfee as a single-user license-- on systems that are incompatible with it. SteveScan leverages the Virex engine and enables users with newer systems to scan and disinfect the startup disk or users folder and link users to the download site for Virex updates. New features in version 2.0 include user feedback while scanning, canceleable scans, a faster GUI, print reports, and the ability to save reports to a text file. SteveScan as been tested with Virex 7.2.1, and "should be compatible with Virex 7.5.1 as well," according to the developer. It runs on Mac OS 10.2 or later. McAfee is offering a Tiger-compatible version of the Enterprise version, starting at $40 per client.

    Virex 7.5.1 my experience

I hope Virex 7.5.1 has been fixed since I first used it. After I downloaded it last April from the .mac site, I set it to "scan and repair" and went out to dinner. When I returned, it had erased all my hard drives - whether internal or external Firewire drives. Rebooting the machine I was confronted with a gray UNIX screen. After working for several hours with a technician it was determined that all data on all disks had been destroyed. Luckily I had made a triplicate backup to tape the day before. Good thing it was in triplicate as during the third hour of the first attempt at catalog reconstruction Retrospect announced that it had encountered a tape error and that the operation had been aborted. The second tape set worked and I got back all my data - - 4 hours of catalog reconstruction, 4-5 hours of data being copied from tape to disk. I reported this event to Apple and shortly afterwards - - coincidentally or not, Virex disappeared from .Mac) Obviously I would never recommend Virex 7.5.1 to anyone. However earlier versions did work without any problems.

    ...virus?

I would very much like to know of specific instances where ANY Macintosh virus scanner has found and destroyed a virus.

Now that MS Office disables macros by default, I just don't see the need for virus scanners on Macs (yet).

(Note to flamers: I'm happy to be proved wrong, I'm just asking the question. :)

    re: ... virus?

You have to go back to the late 90's to find a Mac virus to kill with SAM (may it rest in peace). I don't recall ever encountering a virus after I "discovered" and switched to Virex.

If I recall correctly, there was a minor outbreak of a virus back in the late 90's when transferring files between studio's on Zip disks was very common. Infection, re-infection, you know the drill. But as those incredibly poorly designed drives gradually ate the disks, re-infection eventually stopped. I miss SyQuest drives which hardly ever failed. (But broadband internet is better :-)

    Virex 7.7...

Virex 7.7 is Tiger compatible but is only available in 5-10 user packs. The last edition available to home users in a single-user license through .Mac was version 7.5.1 which is not Tiger compatible.
