'iPods for Senators' fundraising campaign

\'iPods for Senators\'

The Intellectual Property Action Committee (IPAC) is raising funds to buy a fifth-generation video iPod for a host of U.S. Senators, following a recent hearing on the highly-debated "Broadcast Flag" and "Audio Flag" proposals which took an unexpected turn. "Last week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing on the 'Broadcast Flag' and 'Audio Flag,' a set of proposals by the MPAA and RIAA that would stifle innovation by giving content holders a virtual veto over new technologies and existing user rights," IPAC claims. Senator Stevens of Alaska, however, surprised the audience at the hearing after announcing that his daughter had bought him an iPod, which suddenly gave the 82-year old committee chairman "a much greater understanding of the many ways innovative technology can create choice for consumers."

The IPAC is buying a video iPod for the campaigns of Senators who work on legislation affecting technology, and will pre-load each device with examples of the cultural richness made possible by sharing and collaboration. Each iPod will be engraved with the words "listen to the people," and will arrive at each Senator's campaign office with a letter containing a list of all the people who helped pay for it.

    More than free healthcare

They already get free healthcare for life! Now they'll get free iPods too... I think the whole broadcast flag thing was a ploy to get mp3 players.

Smells like a scam to me

Just sent them the following email (to info@ipaction.org): ------------------------------------- How does this campaign avoid running afoul of the law that prevents members of congress from accepting gifts worth more than $50 each? -------------------------------------

Smells VERY fishy to me! (Or a good way to get a free iPod--get people to donate money to buy an iPod for a Senator, send said iPod to Senator, have it returned, pocket one free iPod.)

    how absurd

This approaches the inanity of the swagfest at Sundance. Why give these people even more free c***? Are Senators and their lackeys really that stupid that they can't understand a written document?

    not a scam

icrew: I know Ren from our team responded to your email, but basically, we are giving the iPod to the Senator's campaign instead, and encouraging them to use it in the campaign, such as storing audio and video content on it that they can review later. That's completely legal (as long as donations are reported to the FEC, of course). We consulted with our lawyers thoroughly before launching this campaign.

IPac is a legally incorporated corporation, registered with the District of Columbia and the FEC; it would be illegal for us to keep the iPods, and of course we would never dream of doing this.

If the government is out of touch with the affluent lifestyle, imagine how they are with the poor's.

    Typical...

    Mr. Alper,

This is nothing more than a give away. Most in congress are millionaires that could surely buy an iPod if they wanted or cared to. I find it insulting to "we the consumer" who have to scrimp and save to buy iPods.

Futhermore, all of the relevant information about content protection mtehods can be found in tehcnical white papers or from reliable sources on the internet. Oh, I forgot this is a congress that votes on bills without reading them (ala the Patriot Act).

And, please don't send me e-mail. I don't need to be placed on government watch list as a "person of interest".

When will this corruption ever end...

I think your overlooking the obvious here. Yes they could, but they don't. Why? BEcause they're not technology people. They're making laws about something they don't understand. We've done that a lot in this country's history and it's rarely ever good. If a 200$ iPod gets a vote against some cruddy **AA restriction or helps them become more fluent on IP laws before making a vote, then it's done it's job effectively.

Will it? I donno. For the realitively low cost, it's worth a shot.

    Wasteful

I'm an unemployed graphic artist. Send ME a fr1ggin' free iPod. With video. A black one. 60g.

No, on second thought, wait for the next upgrade to come out. Maybe around March, I'm guessing. THEN send me a free iPod.

With video. A black one. 60g.

    Not techie people

    Saint,

Sure, they're not techie people. But, you mean they don't have young staffers. C'mon. And, a lot of non-techie people buy iPods. How many of last quarter's 14 million unit sales are "techie people"?

America needs to stop excusing the politicians (PACs and lobbyists) for their onerous behavior. It's a gifting no matter how it's being disguised.
