iWork surpasses WP, second to MS Office

iWork takes on MS Office

Apple's iWork surpassed Corel's WordPerfect Office to become the second leading productivity suite in the US in 2005, behind Microsoft Office. CNET News.com reports Apple grabbed a 2.7 percent unit share, while Corel had a 1.6 percent share: Microsoft maintained its dominance with nearly 95 percent of unit sales. "Apple's share is particularly impressive considering that iWork runs only on Macs, which account for a small fraction of computers, said NPD analyst Chris Swenson. "Apple's success for iWork has been pretty surprising," he said. Among Mac users, market researcher NPD said that Apple took 17.4 percent of the market, while Microsoft's Office accounted for virtually the rest of the unit sales. "Apple's iWork didn't overtake Microsoft Office, but I think taking almost a fifth of the Mac Office Suite market away from an entrenched competitor such as Microsoft is quite an accomplishment," Swenson said. Earlier this month, Apple announced an updated version of iWork '06.

Don't count on it. I bet one of the things Apple had to agree with for MS to renew their 5-year contract for Office is that Apple hinder their development on iWork.

Let's just hope that iWork's feature set will not be stuck for years and years like Claris/AppleWorks were. And let's hope that this year will bring Macs fast enough to allow a "near to real time" usage experience with Pages.

I'm assuming OOo wasn't included in these results (because it's free?).

yeah, but where's the spreadsheet app for iWork? I'm still using Appleworks and NeoOffice. Pages is OK, Keynote is great, but they need to do more work in this area.

I still like...

I still like my AppleWorks. Call me old school. I really loved ClarisWorks, and AppleWorks is just nostalgic. And, it's never failed me to open. Never broken. It wasn't bad, just over 12 year old code.

Market Share

01/24, 12:32pm reply

Let me get this straight:

If iWork has 2.7% PC market share, and 17.4% of the Apple market; since it only works on Macs, doesn't that give us an idea of Apple's installed consumer base (instead of blank market share with cash registers and the like)?

Something like 6.44%??

iWork for Windows

Unlikely to happen unless they port a substantial amount of Cocoa to run on top of Windows - '06 makes even more use of common core features - you're really seeing the benefits of the transition to OS/X now.

It will be a long time before MS apps can start making the same use of Vista.
