MS drops Windows Media Player for Mac

Microsoft says it is no longer developing a Mac version of its Windows Media Player for Mac, following the announcement of a separate five-year agreement with Apple to develop Office for the Mac and Messenger: "We have no plans to provide future updates or product support for Windows Media Player for Mac," Adam Anderson, Microsoft public relations manager, told CNET News.com. Microsoft said that it had a made a "business decision" to halt development and product support because it was re-examining its business priorities: "Our focus really is in delivering the best experience to Windows customers." Ironically, the announced followed its public "commitment" agreement to the Mac, but follows an agreement to distribute Telestream's Windows Media Components for QuickTime.

The free components provide playback of non-protected content within QuickTime, supporting Windows Media 9 and high-definition content; however, it does not support content protected with Windows Media DRM. The components require Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, however, the company will continue to provide the current version of Windows Media Player for Mac via the Web, which runs on Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later.

The report notes that Microsoft has not released a significant update to its media player, since Windows Media Player 9 was released in November of 2003.

The Flip4Mac solution of playing WMV files within QT is far superior than their junk Media Player was for the Mac anyway.

Why people still buy/listen/acknowledge that garbage of a company is beyond me.

Somehow it escapes people that Microsoft Office generates substantial revenue whereas Windows Media Player generates none. For several years now, Microsoft has been in the process of eliminating development that does not lead to revenue generation.

I'm sorry, but when was the last time there was an update to Media Player for Mac? Hell, I though they halted development years ago!

rats ass!!?? Even on my wintel i NEVER use WMP. I use quicktime and VLC on it. On my mac, the ONLY Microshit program i have is office (and im ready to get rid of that bloated piece of crap). I dont care about IE, i dont care about Messanger, i really dont care about WMP. Im also with everyone else... i thouhgt they stopped development for mac years ago since the last time they did anything for mac was what..? when os x first came out?? I agree 100% with everyone else in saying the ONLY reason M$ is still doing office for mac is becasue it costs money. With that out of the way....FUCK EM!!!!

...needed a bullet anyway. Windows Media Player for the Mac was always the worst of the three big media players. I'm hoping Flip4Mac can fix the current bugs, but they've already, in a matter of months, produced something far superior to any media player MS ever did on the Mac.

I'm sure Windows users are relieved that Microsoft will be focusing on them. ;-)

Microsoft has a 5 year agreement to develop office for the mac and the software suite generates a profit...sounds like Apple ensures this is a portable venture for Microsoft...perhaps that agreement involved payment(s) from Apple to Microsoft? I mean, really, for anyone to switch, Apple needs to be able to offer Office for the Mac...

I'm glad to see this article simply because I'd never heard of Flip4Mac until today. The WMV plug-in never worked properly; now I can finally watch news videos in Firefox.

Clearly Microsoft hasn't got the brightest marketing people. After a hilarious keynote, which was a new high point in bad presentations, they don't see that if they would made a fan-tas-tic media player for Mac, people might be interested to find out about the operating system of Microsoft. Just as Apple does with iTunes on XP. But instead they make a horrible app which I only use as last option, when every other fails. I hope they'll make sure it's dead and burry WMV deep in the ground to never be found again. PS I only use it for radio streaming. Any alternative for this?
