The company said that the new release offers several new features, including server-based Instant Web Publishing (IWP), which leverages the features including Tab Controls, Drop-down calendar and customized Tool Tips (created in FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced), to bring new levels of usability to browser-based solutions. It also offers the ability to build a customizable home Page via an unique Web page interface.
FileMaker Server 8 Advanced also delivers better security via forms-based authentication (improved security without password caching) and encryption of data transferred between hosted databases and desktop clients using SSL protocols. FileMaker said that user accounts and passwords can be efficiently managed through external authentication using industry standard Active Directory and Open Directory.
In addition, the company announced that the FileMaker Solutions Alliance (FSA) membership now includes a free copy of the FileMaker Server 8 Advanced Development license, which enables developers to create and test server solutions for as many as three users. Members of the FileMaker Solutions Alliance (FSA) may build and test the deployment of FileMaker 8 files running on FileMaker Server 8 Advanced using a special FileMaker Server 8 Advanced Development License for as many as three users.
With FileMaker Server 8 Advanced, users can create a web version of their FileMaker database with a few clicks and web users who access the database via a browser will see the intuitive FileMaker interface without having to use any additional software.
Custom Web Publishing
FileMaker Server 8 Advanced also features Custom Web Publishing (CWP), which delivers rich, XSLT-based web applications. Developers may employ the built-in Site Assistant wizard to integrate FileMaker Pro data into their web sites or work with such web design tools as Dreamweaver 8 from Adobe. The software can support a mixture of both FileMaker Pro 7 and 8 clients on the same network server and up to 100 simultaneous web-connected users. In addition, FileMaker Server 8 Advanced integrates with other applications using such industry standard connectivity options as XSLT, XML, ODBC and JDBC.
The upgrade price from FileMaker Server 7 Advanced to FileMaker Server 8 Advanced is $750, while a full license is $2,500. The software runs on Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, Windows 2000 Server SP4, and Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition and leverages their built-in security to provide Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption of data transferred between FileMaker Server 8 Advanced and the web. FileMaker Server 8 Advanced web publishing supports Apache web server on Mac OS X and IIS web server on Windows. FileMaker Server 8 owners can upgrade to FileMaker Server 8 Advanced with the purchase of the FileMaker Server 8 Option Pack ($1,500).
