Most Admired CEOs in 2005

Apple's Steve Jobs was ranked No. 2 in a survey of . Jobs was second to Microsoft's Bill Gates, but ahead of Dell CEO Michael Dell (No. 4). The global study conducted by Burson-Marsteller with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) named the Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect as the world's most admired business leader, although Gates is not the CEO of Microsoft. The 2005 CEO Capital study asked more than 600 global business influentials in 65 countries to write in which CEO or chairman they admire most in the business world today.

The top 10 list included Gates, Jobs, Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway), Dell, Richard Branson (Virgin), John Browne (BP), Carlos Ghosn (Nissan/Renault), NR Murthy (Infosys), Jeffrey Immelt (GE), and Rupert Murdoch (News Corp), respectively.

The survey found that while the US dominated the top 4 spots, 60 percent of other top 15 leaders were from other regions. It also noted that eight of the top 15 leaders were company founders and that all of the most admired are "insider CEOs"--ones that have been with the same company for more than three years. In addition, Burson-Marsteller noted that the list did not include a female CEO or chairman.

    That's the problem...

That's one of the problems with our society... we admire and reward the most selfish and undeserving of people. A lot of it is ignorance, too. How many people really know what Gates has done?

From personal experience, I've realized that a lot of people have very mistaken and laughable beliefs as to Gates' achievements-- They believe he "created the computer" and the like, while completely ignorant of his bountiful sins as a "business leader".

Now Jobs, he's another story. While not my favorite of people, one has to admit he's quite a CEO/leader. He'd definitely be on my list of admired CEOs, although probably not on my list of most admired people.

    Saved more lives

    Hey Horsepoo,

Look, Im no fan of Windows, and I'm a huge Mac user, but I have to tell you some facts. Bill and Melinda Gates have probably saved more human lives than any other person in the history of the world. That counts for something in my book.

"but I have to tell you some facts"

We're still waiting for facts. While Bill Gates' PR , err, charity foundation have donated to medical research, that doesn't make them life savers. First of all, until the fruits of that research are realized, lives have not been saved, and second of all, it's the researchers who discover the cure that should be credited, not the ones who gave them the money.

Geez, I once loaned twenty bucks to a friend in medical school. Can I lay claim to the lives he is now saving?

That's what Gabriel's point was. You are trying to credit the person who bankrolled the research. Credit should be given to the people who actually save the life, not who gave the money.

    Gates saves lives

Haysek, I mean this in as friendly a way as possible. You have been misinformed.

If you are attempting to argue that money is not responsible for saving lives then we may just have to end the conversation there. Below I have provided two links (Newsweek and Times Online) that only begin to describe the depth of difference Bill and Melinda gates have made in the health of humans in the world. And please note that its not just research funding by any means -- everything from vaccines to sterile needles to malaria reducing mosquito nets have saved many so far. They aren't giving millions -- they're giving BILLIONS.

This is besides the fact that I dont like his Windows OS or his predatory business practices.

    Gates / Jobs Saving lifes

As CEO it's hard to argue against the success of Gates and Microsoft. My god, it is a very profitable company, and isn't that one of the main tasks that a CEO has?

I'm not a fan of Microsloth, but Gates has obviously been an effective CEO. Leader? I'm not sure. Innovator? Absolutely not. But CEO... how can one argue?

Jobs has obviously been a great leader, brilliant innovator (well, at least pushes and inspires innovation, since he does not actually invent himself). His vision is beyond compare. He also seems to be a very good CEO, able to run successful companies.

Who's better? I'm just not sure there is a clear answer. I'd say Bill wins from a profit/market standpoint and Jobs wins with leadership, vision and innovation. He actually wins by making better products. Gates wins by making more money.

As far as Gates saving people. I think he is doing great things with his money and will do even more as he gets older. I give him big kudos for what he is doing with his wealth. However, I'm not sure saving lifes is a good thing with the world population being what it is and getting worse. I would be more for improving the quality of life rather than saving lifes. Less population in Africa/China/India and increase the quality of life there.
