Low chip yield causing Xbox 360 shortage

Xbox 360 shortage

Microsoft today said that the Xbox 360 shortages are now being caused strictly by a " for G5 systems and notified customers that their shipments would arrive late.

The fact that IBM could not fill Apple's orders for chips was one of the deciding factors that swayed Apple's decision to switch to Intel in the first place. Apple has promised to deliver Intel-based Macs in the first half of 2006, but rumors abound that Mactels could arrive as soon as January at the Macworld Expo.

By Microsoft's own admission they are using a slower chip. One that IBM can supply a bit faster.

But the XBox 360 is still being advertised with the older, faster chip set.

It would be like Apple advertising the iMac G5 1.2 GHz but deliberately putting in 1 GHz processors because IBM could supply those better.

You can't sue them, since the procssor speed of the computer is not something they've advertised. You're buying a console, they'll argue, and as long as it works as advertised, there could be a squirrel in the making the thing work.

As opposed to Apple, selling a 1.0 GHz instead of a 1.2, again, that's different because they advertise the peed. Not that Apple would ever replace one chip with a slower one, and charge the same price. Nope, not apple. Oh, wait, that's right, they did that with the original G4 lineup. Never mind.

Class Action Lawsuit

There's your class action lawsuit right there if the chip speed claim is true - bait & switch. A few years, Mazda got some bad test results on their horsepower rating - shorting people up to 10%. They were straightfrward and offered people refunds or $500 - I'm MS will step up to the plate and "do the right thing." Right? Right? Right?

Part of the problem I would think is that the Xbox 360 requires three processors. I wonder why they didn't go the dual core route and add a beefier graphics card. I have no clue about the technology that goes into building a console but it would make more sense to design a system that can be made faster and cheaper than what the 360 is.

The whole plan...

Like Microsoft as usual, to deliver something as delegated by the release date, rather than setting a release date when the product will be ready.

I know people are going to say this is IBMs fault and Apple suffered the same pains, but this chip ordeal is only the icing on the cake. Right now it's just a scape goat for MS.

They should be taking bets in Vegas regarding the success of this unit.

First, people are going to be very upset because they can't get them. Then they are going to be buggy. Next they'll be breaking down before and soon after warranty expires. I foresee that initially these will get high ratings but by the end of 2006 this unit will be completely upgraded by MS and this unit will find its way to the trash can.

All you have to do is look at the company and how they've rushed this to the shelves to beat Sony and Santa.

This is Microsoft's Faul

Microsoft, not IBM, screwed up. Microsoft rushed the product out the door before the chips were ready because it was deadset on beating Sony' Playstation to the punch. Meanwhile, Sony is taking its time and probably will have a better product.
