Apple, Sirius partnership

Sirius Satellite Radio's CEO Mel Karmazin recently in most of the 20 countries it serves, announcing that it had sold over 600 million songs worldwide.

I welcome it

Like I said yesterday... if Sirius can add support for Apple's iPod that would be awesome. I'd love a satellite radio that has a "download to iPod" option. But I highly doubt this will happen unless Sirius wants to jump on the iPod bandwagon. And since it would take music sales away from Apple we know it will never happen. The first time I saw the S50 I thought: wow that's cool... too bad I already have a Nano.

Creative

This could be the end of Creative. They keep crowing about how they have FM radio with their players. If Apple could hook up with a satellite provider, then that would shut Creative up for good. And all the other "me too" crowd.

So what if Apple loose some music sales. They've said repeatedly that they don't make money off the store, it's there to propagate iPods. They only make a few cents off each track. It's a marketing tool that fortunately doesn't cost anything, but isn't a viable business in itself since it doesn't make enough to bother with the investment without the iPod component of the strategy. I have no doubt that Apple would be perfectly willing to loose a fist full of sales to be able to take the cake as the first portable player compatible with a satellite radio system.

Of course, Creative will probably hook up with XM but by the time they do, the horse would have bolted. They're barely in the game as it is.

Sirius sucks. Seriously. Had a rental with it and XM blows it out of the water in sound quality, channel selection, and reception.

Also, Sirius is: 1) in financial trouble - Stern is not going to save them and they owe him and every one else a boatload of $.

2) Mel K has this vision of turning Sirius into something like commercial radio. I got satellite (XM) to get away from that garbage.

3) Behind in technology - their chipsets are nowhere near as mature as XM's. The gap is closing, but they are still behind.

4) Many of the Big Names (Stern and Eminem) turn many off. I'm particularly turned off by Eminem (white trash scumbag), but was a Stern fan untill I started listening to O&A on XM.

Apple, if you're serious about this, partner with XM - you will be rewarded.

With ITGUY05. I have Sirius on my Dish Network TV, and XM in both my cars and XM is totally better. i've been an XM person since it was released and i couln't be happier. going to sirius would be a BIG mistake. XM has a better program overall, and better sound quality. and take it from me, i even work in commercial radio!

XM better? Bullshit.

I've been a Sirius subscriber for a couple of years now - and I love it. Truly commercial free music channels - unlike XM. So please, itguy05, stay with XM, but stop badmouthing Sirius.

Assuming that's true, it's still not a problem. Content sells, not chipset.

Um, it's radio. Change the station. Only a fundamentalist would boycott Sirius over something like that. Getting all the big names you can, really is the right strategy. It's not about the technology, it's about the content.

I don't like Eminem either, but Eminem is a scumbag and O&A are cool? lol

Buy a clue

More advanced chipset = less power required = smaller tuners. Which does sell. Small things sell real well. Witness the Moto RAZR, iPod, etc.

XM's music channels are commercial free. I can't remember the last time I heard a commercial on them.

How do you figure getting the big names is a sure thing? How many people need to join Sirius to pay Stern's $500 mill? Hint: A lot more than they currently have.... Same with all the rest. Sirius is betting that the big names will gain subscribers. And that strategy is not necessarily working out.

Eminem is a scumbag. Wife beater and abuser (proven in a court of law), low life scum. Never heard that O&A beat their wives........

XM vs Sirius

12/09, 03:27pm reply

I don't like Sirius's name, let alone Stern. So that's a negative. XM has been great in the new VW. Either way, I think it's kind of retarded. I hear ads for XM radio ON my XM radio. That's a little redundant. The only advtanage is 24/7 CNN Headline news no matter where I am. That's about it.

XM is still

12/09, 03:30pm reply

better. I've listened to sirius for 3 hours, and heard them repeat songs on the same channel. On XM, i can listen for 5 hours and not hear the same songs. the programming is better on XM, the playlist is BIGGER on XM. ITGUY is still correct. think of it like a movie, you can blow your budget on special effects, and big names, but if its a c*** story line, it WILL fail.
