EasyShare review

Walt Mossberg's for photo organization and editing says that free software and iPhoto are the two best applications available for consumers. Mossberg notes that software offered by hardware manufacturers is not usually up to par; however, EasyShare appears to be the exception to the rule. As expected, users turn to Apple's iPhoto for their needs, but the software is not always free, as the latest version costs $80 as part of iLife. It is, however, bundled free with all new Macs: "if you use an Apple Macintosh, you're in much better shape, because Apple provides a very good built-in photo-organizing program called iPhoto." The downside is that iPhoto is not integrated with any of the popular online photo sites that offer storage and sharing of pictures--although it is integrated with Apple's paid .Mac service--and that most people use Microsoft Windows--not Mac OS X. Most Windows alternatives, he says, fall "short of the combination of simplicity and power that Apple's iPhoto pioneered." Mossberg notes that there are slightly different feature sets on each platform and concludes that "if you're getting a new digital camera or are just buried in pictures from an old one, Kodak EasyShare software is worth a try."

    Is there a better way?

I'm interested in how other people might be using EasyShare.

I use iPhoto to store and organize the photos, but use "export to Kodak EasyShare" to get them onto the Kodak gallery website (formerly, ofoto.com). It's almost 1 click (actually about 5) but is better than having to upload each photo individually using the Kodak Gallery website (about 120 clicks).

Overall I find the EasyShare application a pain, because I just use it as a conduit. I wish Kodak would just make it easy to upload a whole iPhoto album and stop duplicating the iPhoto application (badly). I hate having to update the EasyShare program every time there's a new version (you have to download and install the app each time, it won't just update itself). And it seems to want me to register and go through setup on each download & install.

Does anyone else bother to use this? Is there a better way?
