Rhapsody to support Macs

RealNetworks today will announce a new , which will bring support for Macs and Linux-based devices. The company will support a variety of browsers, including Safari in an effort to expand the reach of its flagship subscription music service Rhapsody, according to Dow Jones. Real's first major announcement since settling its lawsuit with Microsoft in October will include a a "Web-based service called Rhapsody.com, which allows existing Rhapsody subscribers and new users access to streaming music via browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. Previously, Rhapsody subscribers had to access the service by launching software on Windows-based PCs.,,,, Real is the market leader for subscription music products, ahead of Napster and Yahoo. As of the company's last quarterly report, Real claims 1.3 million paying subscribers; Napster reported 448,000 subscribers in November. Yahoo does not break out its music subscription numbers."

The report also says that In the coming weeks, Rhapsody.com will be also available within Microsoft's Windows Media Player 10 and that the MSN Networking will use Rhapsody Web Services to integrate Rhapsody into its MSN Search, MSN Messenger and MSN Music services--as a part of the Microsoft settlement.

Dow Jones also reports that Real will also offer a downloadable upgrade to its existing Rhapsody software. For Rhapsody To Go subscribers, the new version will feature improved functions for transferring tracks to portable music players, including those from SanDisk. There are now over 70 Rhapsody To Go compatible devices on the market, according to the report.

Finally, one less thing for the "All subscripion stores suck because they don't support the mac" crowd to stop arguing about...

So i guess we can play the music in Safari (when it comes available) and transport it to compatible WMA players?

    I Hope....

...they aren't thinking that Apple will open their iPod up to them just because they are doing this. Real has scorned me too many times to ever use them again.

    Slightly disappointed

Must say, I read this headline and got really excited. Would have loved to have been able to use Rhapsody's subscription and radio service alongside iTunes's downloads for my collection and ipods. But as counter intuitive as it seems, I'd still rather just have two applications rather than iTunes and safari, as a program would probably have been a much better experience.

Not an Apple fanatic by far, but this is still a pretty half assed attempt. Maybe they're not sure anyone would even try their service and didn't want to create a full client, but I think they'd have been surprised by what would have happened. Now, as most mac users are pretty fickle and vengeful, we're a lot less likely to use their client in the future if the web experience sucks.

Alas, I'll give it a spin though. Maybe if I contribute to some marginal success for real on the mac platform, it'll spur apple to make some real improvements on its radio offerings.

    It's not so bad...

I get Rhapsody Radio with my Comcast broadband account, and tried the Mac version for the giggles last night. Works pretty well. I'm not sure how much I'll use it, but I like it better than just listening to my iTunes on my Mac. I'm bound to hear something new this way (which I will probably end up buying from iTunes anyway, but it's a better way to sample stuff than iTunes' 30-second clips.)

    eula....

Funny with all the fun stuff with Sony recently, I thought the comments would be about the way Real monitors the use of this. When I clicked on the play button, it said I needed to install something with a very long eula, and I didn't have my attorney available to read it for me. Until I learn what this thing installs, I ain't doing it.
