New iTrip for latest iPods
Griffin today announced is now shipping. Now compatible with all full-sized dock connector iPods, including the newest fifth-generation iPod with video, the new iTrip, with its compact, self-contained design, delivers superior performance and innovative features, making the device one of the most popular iPod FM transmitters. The large, easy to read backlit LCD screen makes setting its digital tuner easy and intuitive, while a convenient switch on the side of the iTrip allows users to easily select a broadcast frequency. It requires no batteries, drawing its power from the iPod itself. The iTrip remembers its settings for convenience. In addition, the iTrip features an innovative, selectable mode for LX or DX broadcasting, which allows you to adjust for the absolute best possible audio under real-world. It is available for $50.

I bought the original Griffin iTrip and the device never worked at all well. It technically worked, but it was incredibly hard to change the station it broadcasted on and it's range seemed considerably worse than comparable products from Belkin and others. Given how lousy that device was I wouldn't urge anyone to buy any Griffin products.

The new ones make it easier to change the station, but they still transmit poorly.

My old car had a tape deck, and I used a simple cassette adapter with my iPod. My new car has a CD player, so I got an iTrip. What a waste! It works OK about 25% of the time, the rest of the time it puts out a lot of static and it's a PITA to have to change stations.

Dock Connector...

I use a cassette adaptor, and I'm not too happy about the quality, to be honest, specially considering the excessive price of the "high quality Sony cassette adaptor" (I think $20 is an excessive price for some coil inside a cassette body).
I was thinking of getting an iTrip instead, which would give me more flexibility, too-- allowing me to broadcast to stereos and other radios without cassette adaptors. But, from what I've heard I'm not too sure about getting one now.
Another problem I see with this new iTrip is that it uses the Dock Connector, thereby disallowing the use of a regular charger, which I already own and use. Oh, sure, you can still use it with Griffin's own charging solution, but that's an extra $25 for something I already have. No thanks.

Got a new one a few months back, that has the freq on the iTrip, not that BS "playlist" nonsense. It's one of the reasons I wasn't going to get a vidPod. Good they came out with this, so I can listen to tunes in my car without having to use the RoadTrip(I broke down and got a 60GB vidPod). RT works well, but gets in the way of the shifter... My Jeep has a direct line in, so I don't need it there.
