Apple to launch \"iPhone\"?

PiperJaffray analyst Gene Munster said he believes Apple will Apple will enter the mobile phone market in 12 to 18 months with the launch of an "iPhone." Additionally the research firm expects to see wireless integration for transfer of audio, photo, and video content between Mac, iPod, AirPort Express, and other devices. Consumers should expect the Mac to "become a hub for consumer digital media as Front Row technology gets incorporated into the Mac Mini." Munster further says to expect "incorporation of TiVo-like DVR capabilities and continued refinement of media center friendly menus and applications. Expect a new product, AirPort Express for video, to bridge the gap between iTunes and the TV, allowing video in iTunes t o be wirelessly sent to your TV." Five years from now Munster predicts that Apple will produce a 1TB iPod offering wireless capabilities that will become a "portable coffee-table media center." The firm has increased its price target for shares of Apple to $68.

    Sure, whatever...

Financial analysts are probably the most misguided people to be talking about the tech sector, and especially Apple.

iPhone? Yeah, they sure hit the nail on the head...

    Uh

Everything they are "predicting" has already happened, except for the Terabyte iPod - which I think is nearer than 5 years off personally!

    To Sure, Whatever

You are right, however regardless of whether or not these predictions can come true... I was just thinking today at how much anaylists talk about apple these days... They used to just smile and say it will be out of business by this time next year... but now... it's What will they make in 5 years?

    Re: Uh

Well, Airport express can't send video. The Mac has no DVR capabilities. And despite the protests of the mac-faithful, the Mini and iMac are pitiful 'entertainment hubs'. No 5.1 sound. No TV-in capability. No recording software. Ooh, it can play music, even from another room (although no way to control it from another room). Yeah, what a hub it is.

    Argh

That reads like a 12 year olds wishlist. I have to agree that the anaylists probably are the last people you really want to listen to.

    tech sector

working in a major technology company myself, his comments are quite reasonable. especially about the iPhone. people don't want to carry around 3 devices, just one. and the phone is the most important one so it will always be a priority for development - the new ipod. it's almost predestined with the way convergence is going.

the apple model will be simple - you have your working computer, your media center and your portable device. all sharing content over wan. the portable device will need to combine still & video camera/phone/mp3/mp4 and a large storage medium (not removeable) - will also be high-speed usb, bluetooth, gsm/umts, iSync'able and accessible via. iTunes.

all speculation of course, but the cool thing is that all of these technologies are currently available in the cellphone form factor - they could build it tomorrow if they wanted too.
