Backup 3.01 released

Apple today released , updating the data protection application to address file restoration issues. The update is recommended for all users, according to Apple. Apple said the update specifically addressed restoring files to an alternate location and accuracy of the iDisk progress bar when uploading files. Apple's free Backup application helps identify the most important files for backing up, grouping them together for easy classification as well as automates the process with a scheduler, backing up files to iDisk, CDs, DVDs, FireWire hard drives, network servers, or an iPod. Backup is included with .Mac membership, and is not yet available via the Web.

I'm all for Apple selling stuff via .Mac but I think the Backup application should be an included app with Mac OS X. They include an easy to use app for almost everything else, why not backups? It seems too important to charge for, to me.

I've been waiting for this fix. I downloaded Backup 3 when it first came out and when I gave it a test run I was quite shocked to find that it wouldn't restore files properly to my desktop. I'm glad to see they've done something about it.

Backup still misses out some fundamental features, like handling weekly full backups with daily incremental. To iDisk, you have erase ALL backups, even those from other machines, and do a full backup, leaving you exposed to risk during the process. And with iDisk speed capped at around 50kb/s and backups now possible to 1gb, this is very bad.
