OpenOffice.org 2.0 offers database module, XML

OpenOffice.org has released the latest version of its open-source/free productivity suite, OpenOffice.org 2.0. Interoperable with every major office suite, including Microsoft Office, version 2 adds a new database module and advanced XML capabilities as well as native support for the internationally standardized OpenDocument format, which several countries, as well as the state of Massachusetts, have established as the default for office documents. The new database module, Base, complements the word processor (Writer), spreadsheet manager (Calc), presentation manager (Impress) and drawing tool (Draw) modules. In addition, version 2 features a redesigned user interface, improved PDF support, an improved spreadsheet module, enhanced desktop integration and the ability to easily create, edit and use XForms. Version 2 is currrently only available for Mac OS X via the X11 window system.

The PDF export now gives greater control over the quality and size of PDFs generated as well as providing support for links, indexes, forms, thumbnails and presentation transition effects. Version 2 also brings new word count functions, supports digital signatures on documents, and offers native-format installers for various platforms.

Not going to be worth anything to the average user without an Aqua GUI again. The average user doesn't want to deal with X11.

here is to hoping the developers to NeoOffice/J get a java wrapper around OpenOffice 2.0 soon. seems much more likely than a native port.NeoOffice is a little slow at times, but still much nicer to deal with than the X11 versions of OpenOffice.

C for Cocoa. There's been an announcement by the lead developer that they'll be back on porting a Cocoa version. Timing probably will relate to the release of Mactel machines. So all is not lost.

This is still a release candidate (2.0.0rc3 Release Candidate3). From the OSX (X11) page:

Advanced Build (2.0 Line) The advanced build is still being qualified but should work well. Use with caution and report bugs to the dev at porting.openoffice.org list

These are developer builds but should work well on your system. But the build is not guaranteed. Important data should be backed up. This release uses the X11 windowing system.

Languages include English, French, German.
