Apple dominates Amazon's top sellers list

Apple currently dominates Amazon's list of top-selling computers, with the top three positions held by its iBook and iMac offerings. The number one computer on the list is Apple's 12" iBook G4, which sells for $1000. Second is Apple's 20" iMac G5, which was unveiled last week by Apple. The new iMac is not shipping yet, but pre-orders have already made it a top seller. Third is Apple's 14" iBook G4, which sells for $1300 and offers more storage and memory than its 12" counterpart.

In total, Apple holds 14 of the top 25 positions in the best sellers list. Apple's compact 12" PowerBook G4 ranks fifth overall, followed by the 1.25GHz Mac mini at number six.

The 1.42 GHz Mac mini ranks ninth, followed by the last-generation 17" PowerBook at 10, and the new 17" iMac G5 at 11. Another configuration of Apple's 12" PowerBook G4 holds the 13th spot and sells for $1400.

Other brands in the top 25 include Compaq, HP, Toshiba, and Sony.

That's pretty amazing! I wonder what accounts for such ranking that exceeds the venerable Sony VAIO and Toshiba Satellite. Are long-time Mac buyers now purchasing from Amazon for some reason instead of the usual Apple Store and local authorized Apple retailers, or is it safe to assume that many or most of these purchases are from first-time Mac buyers? I wonder whether there's any way to know. It would be fascinating to discover and quite exciting to find out that these purchases are being made by first-time computer buyers (if such people still exist) and/or former Windows/Linux users. I hope this trend continues long into the future.

Apple is building momentum just as it did with the iPod, once it runs its going faster and faster. With the Mactel's Apple needs DELL and others to keep up the pace because contrary to the iPod it can't monopolize parts, production and sales for 50+% of the world computer sales.

i had a dream, osX is not going to be restricted to Apple computers only and as a side-effect kill MS in the process, sell your MS stock boys 'n girls. MS is dead if it loses just 20-30% of windows sales and some bad luck with the 360 or Office. :D

Even with my corporate discount it's cheaper from Amazon (no salestax) and the've got a $150 rebate at this time. Hence I decided to purchase from them and wait a little longer. Additionally I purchased a Canon printer on the same invoice and will receive an additional $50 rebate from Canon. So I saved ~200 over Apple. Perhaps others have figured this out as well.

I just checked Amazon Canada, and they don't sell computers there, so I guess that won't be an option for me.

One of the great things is people look and see what the Top 10 machines are, and get confidence that it's a popular machine.

Go into most computer stores and you'd think Apple didn't exist.

Mind you, I don't want Apple to become the new Microsoft. I don't want Google to be the new Microsoft, just as I hope there is never a final winner in the console wars - let's just return to the 80s when there was variety and choice in systems.

Ideal situation - Microsoft banished back to the Office world, various Linux derived and Apple systems in homes, and more and more standard standards for sharing data between them. (Software should sell itself on ease of use and features, not on file format lock-in).

Actually MS can even have a bit of the console market if they keep Sony on their toes - Xbox Live is better than Sony have managed outside Japan.

Mail-In Rebate?

Just curious: Who's picking up the tab for those mail-in rebates? Amazon or Apple? If it's the latter, why don't they offer a similar sales promotion at the Apple stores or to other third-party dealers?

Apple has a price matching policy. Wondering if it would apply to this. Anyone tried?
