Some PB SuperDrives affected by media incompatibility

Some earlier PowerBook G4 computers that have a SuperDrive with a 2x DVD-R write speed may not be able to burn 8x DVD-R media reliably, Apple said in a support document. "Because of this, you should only use 2x or 4x DVD-R media." SuperDrives with the UJ-816 as part of the model number are affected. This can be determined using the System Profiler utility. The announcement comes after heated discussion of the issue on Apple's support forums.

Mine is a UJ-815, which I assume is even older than the UJ-816. I wonder if the same applies to me?

I also have the older UJ-815, not the 816 which appeared in the Alubooks, and no, it cannot write to anything above 4x.

But with such an old drive, I didn't expect it support the latest and greatest in media advancements. That's just life for me!

I also have a UJ-815 in my PB G4 1Ghz which I have updated to burn DVDs at 2x. My question is how long 2x and 4x media will be available? Try to find 8x or 16x CDR media for sale these days, you can only get stuff for faster drives.

Well I have a UJ-815 in a 12" PowerBook and it writes to 8x DVD-R with no problems.

I have a PB 15" 1Ghz (bought in Dec 2002). It has the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-815. This drive is only a 1x.

I am currently using Verbatim 8x DVD-R and they work fine. I think I got them at Sam's Club. Big spindle of 100 disks.

I had problems with TDK (blank white label), I think they were 8x (they don't list the speed on the disk itself, and I threw the rest away after having tons of problems with them. 1 out of 5 would burn, the rest were coasters.

I bought a few 5-packs of Apple DVD's when I first got my PowerBook. I first got the 1x disks, and then 2x after they discontinued the 1x. Never had any problems with them, but have never tried any Apple disks higher than the 2x speed ones. Other brands were cheaper.

I have never had problems with any brand of CD-R's.

I wonder, toeknee - how did you update your 815 to 2x recording?
