Autodesk acquires Alias

Autodesk today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alias, a privately held developer of 3D graphics technology for $182 million in cash. "This acquisition will grow Autodesk's expertise and offerings for the design of consumer products and automotive as well as in the media and entertainment markets." Alias' product lines include sketching, animation, visual effects, design, modeling, rendering and reviewing solutions: Alias MotionBuilder is Alias' 3D character animation product, Alias FBX is widely used in the exchange and use of 3D content, and Maya is the company's award-winning 3D application. AutoDesk says these products will augment its offering in the film and video and interactive games segments and that StudioTools, software for design tasks from 2D sketches to production models, will add industrial design and high-end visualization capabilities to Autodesk's manufacturing solutions. Autodesk will continue to develop the Alias product lines in conjunction with Autodesk's complementary products and technologies.

"This acquisition brings to Autodesk a highly talented group of individuals, a wealth of technologies and a great set of products," said Carl Bass, COO of Autodesk. "Alias' technology spans several of our most important markets and augments the synergy between our design and media businesses. Our design customers are demanding more powerful visualization, animation and publishing capabilities. Our media and entertainment customers are increasingly using the data created by our design applications for broadcast, film and games projects. By combining the technology and talents of our two companies, we will be better able to continue delivering solutions that address our customers' complex needs."

Founded as Alias Research in 1983, Alias is headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Alias customers are some of the world's premier entertainment and manufacturing companies, including Industrial Light & Magic, DreamWorks SKG, Nintendo, General Motors and BMW. Alias revenues were $83 million in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2005.

Does that mean Autodesk will kill Maya for OSX, like they killed AutoCAD for Macs? What a bummer

well, i at first thought the exact same thing. i hope not, but alias was ripe for a takeover when they contracted down to their toronto offices (you just knew something was up). i have heard the head of autodesk uses macs, and that there might be reason to believe autocad could make a reappearance on the mac.

Potentially good or bad!

This could be a potentially good or bad thing. Alias develops a number of products for the Mac. This is good, but Alias does not currently make StudioTools for the Mac, and when asked they say it never will be ported to the mac. AutoDesk has not traditionally been a very Mac friendly company. Cleaner has lived a long slow death at their hands. Combustion is updated as frequently as it's Windows counterpart, but they have no intention of porting Inferno or Flame to the Mac. Shake however is a great competitor to those products though. StudioMax and AutoCad are also not making a trip to the land of the Mac any time soon.

That said it is possible that an influx of Mac OS X savy developers and code could help reinvigorate the Mac at Autodesk. Here is hoping that we won't see the same treatment as Cleaner.

We will add your Cultural and technological distintiveness to our own....

This could go one of two ways.

Maya disappears for the Mac....

Or (less likely)

AutoDesk realizes how easy it is to write software for the Mac and brings all of its applications back to the Mac. Then I can buy Macs at the office again to run AutoCAD. ...... yeah, right.

AutoDesk has how many OS X products? Two?

And 3DS Max is only for Windows. Is this Maya's future, too? I hope not.

If the Alias Mac developers are given their walking papers, maybe they will find refuge with other 3D software companies who will welcome their expertise: Newtek; Maxon. If there are no non-compete agreements, this would be a strategic gain for the companies who hire the Alias developers, IMHO.

Future Apple Macintosh + Intel Chip may lead to NEW opportunities from Autodesk / Alias....

Contact Autodesk & request that they continue their support for AutoCAD & Alias Maya software for PowerPC Macs & future MacIntels.

IF NOT, then buy as much of Alias products as you need NOW!
