Picture Porter
Digital Foci today introduced , its portable digital photo album with hard drive and card reader that securely saves and views digital photos and video, alleviating worry about running low on memory card space. Picture Porter also serves as a portable MP3 player, and connects to most televisions for big-screen viewing. Offered in frosted white and graphite colors, 20GB ($400) and 40GB ($470) models are available. Picture Porter ships with Ulead management software, a USB cable, a video/audio cable, earphones, an AC adapter, a Lithium-Ion battery for 3.5 hours of video and 7.5 hours of music, a remote control, and carrying case.
Built-in memory card slots copy and archive photos directly from any digital camera card without cumbersome cables, negating the need to bring along a Laptop in order to offload pictures and free up space. A bright color LCD screen views pictures on the go, and Picture Porter provides rotation, zoom, and panning options. Compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, Picture Porter measures 5.2 x 2.8 x 1.2 inches and weighs 8.6 ounces with the hard drive and battery included. Compatible media formats include CF I/II, MD, SM, MMC, SD Card, miniSD, Memory Stick, MS PRO, MS Duo, and MS PRO Duo. Supported image formats include JPEG, Tiff, BMP, and RAW. Video formats supported are MPEG1, MPEG4, and DivX 5.x.

Yeah, it is kinda clunky and looks like plastic, yeah, it tries to do everything and has openings for dirt to enter everywhere and who knows what the GUI is like, but
It is a reasonable price for a target audience and if Apple wanted to it could own this space as well with a tiny margin and give pros no excuse to jump ship.
It needs widget-sized iTunes, iPhoto, Keynote (actually those can be saved at QT), Quicktime and iCal, etc. to make it THE pocket media device for lots of pros.
iPod/iTunes owns the market, Apple can afford to go after some of the other market segments and it won't lose money.

why I like Apple's office suite, if they want to dominate they have to play the compatbility card, ie support native PowerPoint files (which it can given they bought the translation company that made the PowerPoint plug in for Keynote). This unit isn't a bad concept.. but it's like the Kodak Digital Picture Frame: it probably won't have a big niche.

this looks like another device to avoid having to use a computer to organize photos. direct-from-memory-card printers also come to mind.
these devices have found a niche because doing anything with photos on a pc is too complicated.
fortunately i have iphoto and don't need any of these!

My wife and I are traveling for two months in Europe. We are looking for a good media transfer device that supports xD and SmartMedia so that we will have plenty of storage space. Perhaps MP3 and video playback is nice but unnecessary. Most devices dont' support xD so we will most likely use a CF adapter. Any suggestions for the best device? Battery life is a must as we are unsure of when we will be near power.
