Nano 'selling well', black 4GB most popular model

iPod nano \'selling well\'

Piper Jaffray said that Apple's to the contrary. Reiterating an "outperform" rating and a $60 price target, the firm conducted a survey of 20 retail stores and found that black 4GB iPod nano was the most popular model, noting that none of the stores had stock of that MP3 player model (as noted by AppleInsider yesterday). The firm also noted that traffic has spiked to Apple's website, according to Alexa.com, indicating growing interest in Apple and its iPod products--driven by the Nano and, to a lesser extent, the iTunes ROKR phone. The firm believes that Apple has learned from the production mistakes of the pasts and has a highly focused product ramp that will enable it to deliver enough quanitity for the holiday season. Apple's manufacturing partner has dedicated a facility solely to iPod nano production, according to Piper's report quoted by Forbes.com.

    8GB nano by Xmas

Apple needs to fill in the space between 4GB and 20GB with a nice 8GB nano. Too bad they didn't keep the mini line and bump the capacity to 6GB and 8GB - the nano craze will be short lived, unless they come out with more colors or more capacity. People wear the mini as a fashion accessory - not so with the nano (no belt clip - c'mon Apple!) Just my $0.02...

    Geesh

Some people are just never happy. Some people always want more.

I personally find the Nano to be all that I expected - and a whole lot more! I don't see the need for an 8GB model as people with large collections, like myself, will buy the traditional IPOD - not the Nano!

    Sluggish Sales?

I'm not sure what it's like in the US - but in Japan at the Ginza Apple store last Friday ALL the 4gb versions were gone, as well as the black 2gb version. There were plenty of white 2gb units sitting around - and I saw hardly anyone buy them in the hour I was there.

So, my take is that the 2gb nano is not seen as a very good deal, given the doubled capacity for only 5,000 yen more (~$50). And that those few who would settle for a 2gb only wanted Black.

Plus, the lack of any nano accessories may have also kept the fence sitters on the fence. (The lame arm band doesn't count). Here in Japan, Lanyards on MP3 players are popular, especially those that double as lanyard headphones. Apple's failure to have theirs in stock is not a positive thing.

If sales are indeed slow, it could be that the bulk of nano inventory is 2gb and white. Perhaps Apple should have considered more Black or other colors, along with a larger supply of 4gb units.

    mrfrodo1's high horse

Some people are just never happy. Some people always want more

Wow - yes, mrfrodo - some people are just not satisfied with everything that Apple comes out with. I'm sure that this is a surprise to you, as your comments reveal you as an Apple aplolgist. I am very happy with my mini, but I want more capacity without the weight of the full iPod - a lot of people I know are waiting for a 2nd gen nano with increased capacity.

The mini will be missed once the first wave of nano-craze is over - Apple's sales iPod sales will drop (Apple dropped their most popular iPod - seems like a silly move and is pretty hard to defend with LOGIC).

Apple has left some holes in their iPod offerings, particularly in terms of capacity - 20 and 60GB for the iPod - hmmm, what happened to 40GB?

So, we are so glad that YOU are happy with the nano and that YOU would just choose an iPod to get the extra capacity (regardless of extra size). Too bad you based you post on personal opinion and didn't open your mind as to what other people might want and need in an iPod.

Yes - some people always want more and others are complacent sheep who take what is given them. Thanks mrfrodo1!

    smudges

Saw them for the first time the other day and the black shows finger prints very easily, the white doesn't show. Just an observation.
