Gates: Microsoft must play catch up to Apple, Google

updated 07:45 am EDT, Wed September 14, 2005

Interview with Bill Gates

Bill Gates yesterday acknowledged that , the next version of its popular business productivity suite, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "He compared the current rivalries to legendary ones with Lotus, Novell and WordPerfect -- situations in which the Redmond company ultimately overcame steep odds to prevail. 'At any point in our history, we've had competitors who were better at doing something,' Gates said, ...underscoring the fact that it wouldn't be unprecedented to come from behind now."

"Sony is ahead of us in video games. We're just on the verge of something (the Xbox 360) that will help us close the gap there. In Web search, Google is the far-away leader. Big honeymoon for them. Even if they do 'me, too' type stuff, people think, 'wow.' And Apple in music has done a fantastic job."

Gates said Microsoft would match its competitors in areas where they have done well: "We'll match what they do, we'll bring new things to it, do it better and integrate it in with other things. And so it's very healthy for the consumer. We see that in search, we see it in music. It's not new at all that that's out there."

as pie. just modify your os so other programs don't work and only yours does and hope the government continues to ignore your illegal ways.

he never "beat" anybody in a fair game. the odds had to be stacked for him to win.

    Hey!

Haven't they ALWAYS been at least one step behind their competitors? =D

    Lotus, right...

The flaw in Billy boy's comparison is that Apple was around back then, and Apple is still around now, still making a big splash. Things are also different now, and the tide may soon turn against M$'s OS/app/ect monopoly.

    That Idiot Gates

As ususal Bill's comments are skewed as he said they would match the competition but what he really means is he'll copy the competition.

"We've always has the shittiest quality product. We've still managed to strong-arm our competitors out of the market. We're going to do that again so please don't sell our stock."

    "me too"

I missed that first time. Love that comment. Has there ever been a single thing MS hasn't done that wasn't a "me too"? Ever?

    Brain Washed Lemmings

To the vast majority of the unwashed lemmings in the world, they only know what the idiot IT manager of their office tells them. These IT freaks are all "MS Certified". They eat MS, the sleep MS and would be out of a job if it wasn't for MS.

Over the years, they are learned that computers (MS OS) are difficult and they need the advice of their office IT Manager in order to make decisions for home.

For all of the brainwashed lemmings in the world, MS is good enough. That is all MS has ever strived to be - "good enough"

True innovation will never be reward by lemmings and followers.

    I think it was Napolean

who said, never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake, or words to that effect. Bill really puts the PU into a computer.

    The problem with Office

The problem with Office is that there just aren't enough features.

Obviously the number one tool in any office is a phone, but try to get Word to handle your voice mail! Have these people never been in an office? Sheesh! And don't even get me started on electronic banking and text messaging. Calling it "Office" when it clearly isn't anything like an office is tantamount to fraud.

Microsoft - make it bigger and more feature rich or get off the pot. A true office application would have a minimum of 1.5 million features. And what does MS Office have? A paltry 750,000. A 12 year old child could learn to use them all in a few years and be left wanting more. It's crazy and it's false advertising.

    M$ = Dubya

Microsoft is the Bush of the computer industry: no matter how lousy they are, no matter how badly they f*&k up, they remain on top. The incompetence just rolls off 'em.
