FEMA, PowerLogix, MacBUS

In brief: Applying for disaster relief on the FEMA web site requires certain versions of IE on Windows, however this can be circumvented with the about the new Motorola ROKR iTunes mobile phone, stating that "instead of getting something with an unexpected cool factor, I got exactly what Apple hinted at [...] frankly, I was expecting more."

    ROKR does suck, but...

first of all it's *motorola's* ROKR, apple just allowed/worked with them to implement an itunes client. i think we're all disappointed, but it's a pretty smart move by apple. if it tanks it doesn't really taint the ipod or apple brand. if it's successful apple can create their own phone and use the success to leverage additional carriers.

as for the guys PDA wet dream. get over it, in case you hadn't noticed apple is very, very good at creating simple, elegant and easy to use devices. the kitchen sink approach is *never* going to happen with apple consumer electronic devices. they're smart enough to follow the 80/20 rule. e.g. 80% of the people are only going to use 20% of the features, so let's not waste time money and effort making the ipod a jack of all trades.

    ROKR phone

I agree with the blogger... I had been waiting anxiously to upgrade my piece of c*** Nokia to the ROKR but it's disappointing. 100 songs? And since I listen to DJ mixes a lot... not very many will fit on it.

It doesn't look cool at all. If you're gonna drop 3 bills on a cell phone, it needs to have some bling bling factor to it.

I guess it has a camera/video function but it was hard to figure that out from Cingular's site. So, how many songs can I put on it if I take photos/video too? Is that going to cut into that teeny tiny memory capacity?

I am going to wait for either the next gen ROKR or an Apple phone if they do it (please Steve!)

    kitchen sink

yeah I don't agree with that guy's swiss army knife/bloatware approach.

It's very very difficult to make one device that does EVERYTHING really well. He sounds just like all the people that want the iPod to have an FM tuner, PDA, GPS, blender, food processor and whatever else they think Apple should shoehorn into it.

    RoKr Is typical junk

As you are fully aware, Rokr is made by Motorola, a company that used to make good cell phones (remember the great StarTac??). Now they make junk (looks at his Moto 720 and holds back the puke).

Apple is working with Moto out of sympathy, or out of a history of working with them (and who knows what kind of cross technology agreements they have left over from their partnerships).

The fact is that the RoKr is a clunky phone, with little memory, and limited to Cingular, which is another problem. Cingular is good in some markets, but sucks inothers. What about Verizon? What about Sprint? The technologies are compatable.

The bottom line is that Apple should make their OWN cell phone that can be attached to any carrier, whether it be Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, et. al. Then they can design it in typical Apple fashion instead of "glomming" iTunes onto an inferior product.

Call it the iPhone. Design it with the simplicity of the iPod (or even the Motorola StarTac). Add MP3, and a 4megapixel cam. Use "datebook" and "address book" as your built in PDA, and even have the OS either MacOS light, or a derivitive of the iPod OS.

Whatever, the current RoKr is a brick.

    too bad...

they didn't add the itunes capability to one of the black RAZRs. Now that would at least upped the ooh-ahh factor.
