Apple announces iTunes 5

Apple today announced , bringing new features and a refined look to the digital music jukebox and online music store. iTunes 5 includes a new Search Bar to make it easier for users to find what they're searching for; the ability to organize playlists into folders; Smart Shuffle, which lets the user change the "randomness" of shuffled songs; and the ability for Windows users to automatically sync contacts and calendars from Outlook onto their iPods. According to Apple, iTunes 5's new Search Bar helps users find "exactly what they are looking for" within the catalog of two million songs, 15,000 Podcasts and 10,000 audiobooks on the iTunes Music Store, plus everything in their own iTunes music library. The iTunes Music Store has also added parental controls and album reviews, and now features a catalog of over two million songs.

The iTunes Music Store now features over 1,000 album reviews from Apple's team of music experts. The reviews cover some of the best albums over the past 50 years, including current hits from Coldplay, Kanye West and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as classic artists such as Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra.

"iTunes is widely regarded as the best jukebox, with the world's most popular online music store built right in," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We are constantly improving iTunes with new features like Podcasting and better searching because we love music ourselves and want to surprise and delight music fans around the world."

    QuickTime 7 Included

For Windows users, a final version of QuickTime 7 is embedded inside iTunes 5.

Hopefully, we will see H.264 reach critical mass soon and replace XviD.

    Standardize Already Apple

I like the new look. I just wish Apple would standardize already. I want iTunes, iCal, Mail, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWork, Address Book and Safari and every other Apple made application to use and have one look!

    Why Apple?

    Re: Standardize Already

I just wish they'd stuck with one look (aqua) for multi-window apps and one (graphite) for one-window 'appliance' apps.

    It's a bloody mess, I tell you.

    Software Update?

Didn't show up under software update although the Quicktime update did! Does this mean that I have to trawl rumour sites to find out what updates are available? Too...lazy...can't...lift...finger...to...click...mouse!

    Help don't work

Opened iTunes help to read about the new Folder feature and... it don't work. Main page topics don't work, searching on results returns to main page topics... which don't work....

    Hope it's just my machine.

    Folders sync to iPod?

Does the new folders structure sync to the iPod? If so, thats one more barrier gone from me considering an iPod to replace my Rio Karma.

Hierarchal folders are a must for me. Crossfading and gapless are also nice, but I doubt the iPod has either yet.

    folders

No, the folders are just "organizers" in iTunes, everything flattens out on a Pod. As I have a ton of "smart playlists" I was really hoping the folder structure would appear that way on my Pod... but they lamed out.

No gapless, no ability to switch libraries. Far as I know, there are the 2 "most requested" features for the past 2-3 years.

    interface is ugly!

...I don't like it at all. It actually isn't even consistent with Mail, which is lighter grey. I particularly hate the square box the EQ / song title appears in. Why must interface designers continue to believe that software should look like real hardware? The oval was much nicer, and contained the clickable buttons much better. Now there's just hard-edged, wasted space that's aggressive-looking. And what's with the two-toned green background? The line right across the middle looks idiotic, particularly when the CD title scrolls up.

Is there a way to ensure podcasts don't mix with the rest of your library? I hate that.
