Intel confirms three new CPUs, "handtop" chips

updated 01:30 pm EDT, Tue August 23, 2005

New CPUs, handtop chips

Intel CEO Paul Otellini told attendees of the Fall Intel Developer Forum that three new chips scheduled for the second half of 2006 are to use that will succeed Netburst, currently used by its Pentium 4 and Xeon CPUs. Otellini also told of plans to create a new class of chips to be used in handheld devices, which Intel dubbed "handtop" PCs. Otellini also said that the company is working to develop powerful chips that consume only a half watt of power by the end of the decade. Otellini further stated that the company's new architecture for PC and server chips will combine the power-saving focus of the Banias architecture used to build the Pentium M notebook processor with the performance provided by Netburst. Analysts and sources familiar with Intel's plans predicted as early as last year that Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest will be the first chips to use the new architecture. Otellini confirmed that the chips will be 64-bit capable and come with Intel's virtualization technology, the LaGrande security technology and the company's Active Management Technology.

    performance per watt

so is this part of the amazing "performance per watt" stuff we've been waiting for?

Will we be able to run these devices on fuel cells? Yes!

    think iPad

Those low watt mobile chips and such could power newer iPods down the road with more powerful media features like a media center type device that Creative offers and also... the tablet based Mac possibly. Or maybe eventually the iTricorder,.. hey, one can dream:)

    Future looking

Do you remember the days when new Intel processors would mean nothing to Mac users?

    How times change ...

    Facts...

The facts are: despite improvements in processor speed and bandwidth, battery designs have not exponentially improved.

So it makes a huge amount of sense to create a CPU that has processing power but uses electrical power in an efficient manner.

That's the key to future devices - people want battery life that will last longer than a couple of hours.

Recharging a device once a week would be a lot more desirable than once a day.

    More facts...

another aspect to low power (and Intel's shift of focus) is because the immediate future lies in multiple-core processors (quads at the least) on the desktop. Faster speeds led to roadblocks for everyone, and this is the most immediate, safest way to push performance.
